Alvarez & Marsal's Strategic Entry into Japan
On October 16, 2025, Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), one of the leading professional services firms globally, announced its official entry into the Japanese market with new offices in Tokyo and Osaka. This strategic move underscores A&M's commitment to expanding its presence in Asia's financial hubs and addresses the increasing demand for diversified consulting services within Japan.
A&M has established a robust track record over its 40 years of operation, specializing in management improvement, corporate restructuring, and advisory services. A&M Japan starts its operations with a solid team of 14 members, including six highly experienced Managing Directors with extensive backgrounds from leading firms. The initial focus will be on creating a specialized team with deep expertise in M&A-related practices, offering expert services in finance, accounting, tax, and corporate finance both domestically and internationally. There are plans to further enhance capabilities in business restructuring and value enhancement areas, reflecting evolving client needs.
As part of this expansion, Daizaku Nonaka joins the Tokyo office as the representative for A&M's Global Transaction Advisory Group (Global TAG) and Managing Director. Nonaka recently served as a partner at Deloitte Tohmatsu Financial Advisory LLC, leading the private equity division for nearly 20 years in Japan. His experience will be pivotal in expanding Global TAG's services within Japan and facilitating cross-border transactions across Asia and other key markets. Joining him in the Tokyo office will be Teppei Matsuda, also a former partner at Deloitte, alongside staff members with expertise from Deloitte and PwC.
With multinational companies increasingly expanding operations in Japan, the demand for tax advisory services is rising. In response, Ichiro Sudou will lead A&M Japan's tax division as Managing Director, bringing over 30 years of experience, including a tenure as a partner at EY, where he specialized in international tax for the financial services sector. Under his leadership, A&M will establish a dedicated team of tax specialists in Japan as part of its extensive Asia-wide network. Supporting members include Yoshitomo Uno, with experience at EY, and Koichi Hattori, who leads A&M Japan's M&A tax service unit and has a background at Deloitte.
In addition, A&M Japan's corporate finance division will welcome the expertise of Katsu Kon, who has a rich background of 25 years at Nomura Securities and held key positions at EY and IR Japan.
These founding members are poised to execute A&M's global business model in the Japanese market, focusing on leadership, execution, and tangible results.
Brian Marsal, co-founder and co-CEO of A&M, commented on this Japanese expansion, stating, "Japan's business landscape is seeing energetic activity in corporate restructuring, divestitures, and cross-border M&A. There is a growing need for a new type of consulting firm that combines a global outlook with advanced local expertise focused on value creation. A&M embodies that role. Our entry into Japan is not only a milestone for our company but also an opportunity to deliver services not previously offered by existing players to clients in this market. Throughout our history, A&M has entered markets where our expertise meets client demand. As one of the world's largest economies, Japan will serve as a crucial hub for our operations in Asia. By blending our global network with local expertise, we are committed to providing diverse, results-driven value to Japanese clients without the constraints of audit independence."
Paul Aversano, Managing Director and Global Practice Leader at Global TAG, stated, "The consulting industry in Japan is undergoing consolidation, and a business model like A&M's, unbound by traditional methods, is necessary to meet the diverse needs of clients. This founding team has a strong track record of delivering client-centric, high-quality services and embodies our human capital strategy with its entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to value creation. With the support of our global network, this team will solidify A&M's position as a leading consulting firm in the Japanese market."
Daizaku Nonaka expressed, "Our ambition to integrate global best practices with local expertise in the Japanese market is supported by A&M's global network. With deep insights across various industries, operational excellence, and a senior member-led client response strategy, we aim to provide high-value solutions for our clients. By embedding A&M's global culture while deepening our expertise in Japan, we aspire to become a trusted advisor for Japanese enterprises, private equity firms, and global corporations."
