Texas Southern University and Dr. Ruth J. Simmons Launch New Clinic for Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention

Texas Southern University (TSU) has made a significant commitment to improving health outcomes in Southeast Texas by unveiling the Nora B. Wilson Endowment and Health Clinic. This initiative is spearheaded by the esteemed Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, an educator deeply committed to serving the community, and pays tribute to her late sister, Nora B. Wilson, a breast cancer survivor.

The primary objective of this endowment is to bolster the Texas Southern University Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention Center, which caters to nine counties: Harris, Brazoria, Galveston, Walker, Grimes, Matagorda, Wharton, Trinity, and Polk. By focusing on prevention and early detection, TSU aims to lower the rates of breast cancer and provide essential resources to the community.

President of TSU, J.W. Crawford III, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards Dr. Simmons and the Wilson family for their generous contribution. He emphasized the importance of this clinic as a way to honor the legacy of Nora Wilson, whose strength and resilience have inspired countless individuals. The clinic is currently located in the Texas Southern University Institute of Urban Public Health and Housing and is expected to transition to the new Community Health Center once completed in 2027.
