Encompass Health Partners to Build New Rehabilitation Hospital in Cookeville, Tennessee
New Horizons for Rehabilitation Care
In a significant move to bolster healthcare services in the Upper Cumberland region, Encompass Health Corp., a prominent leader in rehabilitation hospitals, has partnered with Cookeville Regional Medical Center to construct a new 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility. This new establishment is set to rise on the Cookeville Regional Medical Center campus, addressing the region's increasing demand for rehabilitation care, particularly as its senior population continues to grow.
Encompass Health’s president for the MidAtlantic region, Abe Sims, expressed pride in this partnership, emphasizing its role in meeting local needs. "This facility will enhance access to inpatient rehabilitation services, allowing patients in the Cookeville area to remain closer to home during their recovery from illness or injury," Sims stated.
A Comprehensive Care Approach
The new rehabilitation hospital is dedicated to aiding patients recovering from various conditions, including strokes, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations, and complex orthopedic issues. By offering a wide spectrum of services, the facility will ensure comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s needs. The hospital will feature around-the-clock nursing staff and provide essential therapies such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy, delivered by a specialized team of healthcare professionals.
"This state-of-the-art facility is designed to support patients recovering from serious health challenges in a comfortable environment," noted Buffy Key, CEO of Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Key highlighted the unique commitment by both Encompass Health and Cookeville Regional to patient comfort, noting that all patient rooms will be private, playing a crucial role in the healing process.
Features of the New Hospital
In addition to providing all-private patient rooms, the facility will boast a state-of-the-art therapy gym equipped with advanced rehabilitation technologies, an activities of daily living suite, an in-house dialysis suite, a pharmacy, and an outdoor therapy courtyard designed for therapy sessions. Each facet of the hospital is constructed to foster recovery and independence.
Timeline and Operational Continuity
Operations are scheduled to begin in 2027. Notably, Encompass Health has already begun managing the Cookeville Regional Medical Center's existing 20-bed rehabilitation unit as of January 1, 2026. This existing unit will continue to serve patients throughout the construction phase. Upon the new hospital's completion, these beds will transition into the new facility, reinforcing its operational capacity from the outset.
