The Inaugural Shaw Prize for Computer Science

On January 28, the Shaw Prize Foundation announced the establishment of the Shaw Prize for Computer Science, adding a prestigious new category to its existing accolades in Astronomy, Life Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences. This initiative marks a monumental step in recognizing groundbreaking contributions in the field of computing.

Composition of the Selection Committee

The inaugural selection committee comprises distinguished experts from around the world, including Turing Award laureates, former university presidents, and high-ranking officials from the IT and educational sectors. The committee will begin accepting nominations for the first award between September and November 2026, with the winners to be announced in the spring of 2027.

Leadership of the Committee

Leading the committee is Professor Jennifer Chayes, Dean of the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society at UC Berkeley. She emphasized the diverse backgrounds of committee members as a key strength. Chayes remarked, "Our committee combines extraordinary expertise from across the globe and reflects the international and interdisciplinary nature of computer science today. This diversity ensures a fair, inclusive, and rigorous evaluation process."

Professor Tony Chan, a notable figure who has previously served as president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is also a member of the committee. He hopes that the Shaw Prize will genuinely honor significant contributions to computer science, thanks to its esteemed standing and history. Another committee member, Professor John L. Hennessy, who led Stanford University for 16 years and is a Turing Award recipient, expressed his aspiration for the prize to highlight the importance and intellectual depth of computer science.

The committee also includes three additional Turing Award winners: Professors Jack Dongarra, Yann LeCun, and Joseph Sifakis. Professor Dongarra, who won the Turing Award in 2021, conveyed his excitement in helping establish this award from the ground up. He stated, "I hope the prize sends a signal that bold, discipline-defining ideas, especially those from younger researchers, are recognized and celebrated by the global community."

Professor Sifakis, a 2007 laureate and an emeritus research director, discussed the fundamental challenges in the field. He noted, "The answer to the quest for intelligence lies in exploring mental phenomena and understanding how consciousness originated in living organisms."

Professor LeCun, who serves as the CEO of AMI Labs and holds the Jacob T. Schwartz Professorship at New York University, mentioned the crucial role computing plays in human capabilities. He noted that we are rapidly achieving levels of human-like intelligence that will have profound and extraordinary implications for humanity—mostly positive, yet not without significant concerns.

Professor Harry Shum, Chairman of the University Council at HKUST, reiterated the importance of computer science, claiming that achieving human-level intelligence will leave a deep mark on our society.

Professor Jeannette M. Wing, an executive vice president for research and a computer science professor at Columbia University, reflected on the significance of this new award. She stated, "It is a recognition that the Shaw Prize Foundation acknowledges our discipline and honors those who have created not only a scientific understanding of computation but also technologies that have transformed every aspect of our lives."
