BayCare's Graduate Medical Education: A Growing Force in Medicine

BayCare's Graduate Medical Education (GME) program has made significant strides this year, achieving a noteworthy accomplishment by filling all of its available residency positions for the second consecutive year. Following a successful Match Day on March 20, 2026, the program is set to welcome a remarkable 194 new residents this July, further expanding its ranks to over 400 physicians.

As the largest academic health system in the region, BayCare plays a pivotal role in cultivating a new generation of medical professionals. The ongoing success of the GME program is vital for addressing the healthcare needs of the growing population in West Central Florida. By expanding access to high-quality medical care, BayCare aims to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction across its facilities.

More than 60% of our graduates remain with us, practicing in our clinics and hospitals."

Research from the Association of American Medical Colleges indicates that many physicians who complete their residency training tend to practice in the same state where they were trained. This trend is evident in BayCare's GME program, which boasts a high percentage of incoming residents who are Florida natives or have completed their medical education in the state.

Looking forward, BayCare has ambitious plans for growth. The health system aims to expand its GME program to include more than 650 residents by the year 2029. Current offerings include 14 residency programs alongside three university-sponsored programs, covering critical areas like emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and transitional years.

Each year, Match Day is orchestrated by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). This process facilitates the pairing of final-year medical students with residency programs based on mutual preferences. Students submit their ranked preferences for residency positions, while programs evaluate applications to identify suitable matches.
