Logistics Providers Embrace AI for Enhanced Barcode Reading Performance

As the manufacturing landscape faces escalating demands for traceability and security, the effective reading of barcodes has become increasingly crucial. A recent survey conducted by Cognex Corporation reveals that manufacturers are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle significant challenges associated with barcode reading, ultimately enhancing overall performance.

In the manufacturing sphere, the efficiency of barcode reading can dictate the flow of operations. As Carl Gerst, Executive Vice President of Vision and Identification Products at Cognex, pointed out, "Utilizing advanced technology to simplify our clients' processes is imperative. This survey underscores the value of embedding AI in our barcode reading solutions. Our AI-based systems deliver matchless performance and reliability, directly addressing the pressing concerns our clients encounter."

The survey, which included a diverse group of 283 participants from manufacturing and logistics industries across Asia, North America, and Europe, highlights the rising significance of AI, especially in complex barcode applications. Notable findings from the survey include:

1. Complex Barcode Challenges: The primary concern for 41% of respondents involves the reading of damaged, smeared, or wrinkled barcodes. Other prevalent issues include distortion, glare, and curved surfaces (39%), and problematic sizes and placements of codes (35%).

2. Expectations from AI: A substantial majority of respondents anticipate that AI will improve barcode reading capabilities, with almost half (47%) expecting higher read rates. Additional key expectations include enhanced accuracy in detection and better reading of compromised codes, particularly emphasized by logistics providers who prioritize precise detection.

3. Dependability and Maintenance: When selecting a barcode reader, reliability and ease of maintenance are paramount for users. This focus on dependable performance is understandable, considering only 21% of respondents categorized themselves as experts, while about a third identified as beginners. This gap in expertise emphasizes the urgency of addressing maintenance concerns essential for daily operational needs.

The complete report, available for download at cognex.com/barcode-insights, outlines how AI is transforming barcode reading technology. As manufacturers seek to navigate these challenges and enhance operational efficiency, AI-integrated barcode readers like the recently unveiled Cognex DataMan 290 and DataMan 390 are well-equipped to meet these demands with advanced decoding capabilities.
