Cultural Exploration: Shunga Night at 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku

A collaboration event titled Shunga Night!! is set to take place exclusively on August 1, 2025, at the 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku, situated within the iconic Tōkyū Kabukichō Tower. This unique occasion will feature a special screening of the documentary film Shun no E - Shunga, highlighting the captivating world of Shunga (Japanese erotic art), alongside a thought-provoking talk event.

Prior to the film screening, Mitsuru Uragawa, a prominent figure in the Shunga community and representative of the Uragawa Sōkyūdō, will engage attendees in a fascinating discussion about lesser-known Shunga pieces not exhibited during the ongoing Shinjuku Kabukichō Shunga Exhibition. Joining him will be Maki Tezuka, the exhibition's instigator, enriching the audience's experience with insights into these exquisite artworks.

About the Exhibition

The Shinjuku Kabukichō Shunga Exhibition: Weaving Cultural Connections will showcase around 100 Shunga artworks created during the Edo period by renowned artists like Hishikawa Moronobu, Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsushika Hokusai, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Uragawa, recognized as the world’s leading collector of Hokusai Manga, has dedicated his career to promoting the allure of Shunga both in Japan and globally. His involvement in major exhibitions, including the 2013 British Museum show Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art, has made significant contributions to the appreciation of this art form.

This exhibition will take place at the Shinjuku Kabukichō Nōbutai, showcasing the creativity and cultural significance of Shunga through an immersive display designed by esteemed art director Yasuyuki Hayashi of Chim↑Pom. The exhibition will run from July 26, 2025, to September 30, 2025, inviting visitors to delve into the rich history of Japanese erotic art in an unforgettable atmosphere.
