Michter's Distillery Unveils US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Whiskey
This May, the renowned Michter's Distillery will debut its US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey, a significant milestone in the distillery's illustrious history.
Joseph J. Magliocco, president of Michter's, reflected on the company’s roots by stating, “In the 1970s and 1980s, the most popular whiskey produced at our Pennsylvania distillery was the Sour Mash. Today, the Michter's US★1 Sour Mash we make in Kentucky shines as a remarkable whiskey, and we are excited to present it at barrel strength.”
Michter's distilling process has gained international acclaim, especially in 2019 when its US★1 Sour Mash was awarded the prestigious title of "Whiskey of the Year" by The London Whisky Exchange. The history behind the sour mash technique dates back to 1818 when Catherine Carpenter recorded the first known sour mash recipe. This innovative process revolutionized whiskey production, ensuring a more consistent product.
Master Distiller Dan McKee explained, “Most whiskey in the U.S. is made using the sour mash method, but the term can be misleading. Our Sour Mash Whiskey is anything but sour; it is rich in delightful notes of toffee and stone fruits.”
Michter's US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash will carry a retail price of $120 per 750 ml bottle and boasts a robust average alcohol content of 111.5 proof (55.75% ABV) in the 2026 release. Andrea Wilson, the Master of Maturation at Michter's, described the US★1 Small Batch Sour Mash Whiskey for its consistent elegance and soft quality at 86 proof, emphasizing its popularity among whiskey aficionados.
