CME Group Expands Agricultural Options
CME Group, a leading player in the derivatives marketplace, has launched an extended suite of Weekly agricultural options on grains and oilseed futures. This new update allows options expiry for each trading day of the week, marking a significant enhancement for traders gearing up for the impending growing season.
John Ricci, Managing Director and Global Head of Agricultural Markets at CME Group, emphasized the benefits of this development: “With an expiry now available for every day of the week, CME Group will provide market participants with maximum flexibility.” As the trading environment grows increasingly complex due to economic uncertainties, the demand for these short-term options has surged, offering clients more tools to address price risk efficiently.
Matthew Garmon, Head of Trading at Greenfield Commodities, LLC, highlighted the advantages of the expanded options, pointing out how these new expirations align with significant market events, such as WASDE reports. He explained that businesses can now make better-informed decisions on options structures, as daily expirations offer a greater degree of precision in risk management.
This sentiment is echoed by Steve Sanders, EVP of Marketing and Product Development at Interactive Brokers, who remarked on the growing popularity of short-dated options. He noted that the new options will empower traders to express their short-term opinions with greater efficiency.
In 2024, Weekly agricultural options saw a record volume, achieving an average daily volume (ADV) of 18,964 contracts—an impressive 72% increase compared to the previous year. Key products driving this growth include Soybean Oil, Soybean, and Corn, with notable increases of 220%, 109%, and 63%, respectively. In January 2025, the ADV for Weekly agricultural options skyrocketed to 28,037 contracts, marking the third-highest monthly volume ever recorded.
The newly launched options include Weekly expirations for Corn, Soybean, Wheat, Soybean Oil, and Soybean Meal futures, with oversight by the CBOT's rules. For traders and investors looking to leverage these new offerings, CME Group provides comprehensive resources on its official
