Texas Remains the Top Destination for In-State Moves in 2023
In 2023, Texas stood out as the leading state for in-state relocations in the United States. According to a report by Texas REALTORS®, more than 11% of the state's population, amounting to approximately 3,356,000 people, moved from one location to another without crossing state lines. This statistic marks both the highest percentage and the largest number recorded in any state for local relocations, highlighting Texas’s continuous appeal as a desirable place to live.
This insight derives from the U.S. Census data, which Texas REALTORS® analyzed in their Winter 2024 Texas Relocation Report. This report provides an update on previous migration statistics, now enriched with data from 2023, and paints a picture of Texas not only as a hub for individuals and families relocating within its borders but also as an attractive destination for those moving from other states.
Jef Conn, President of Texas REALTORS®, commented, "Texas is a fantastic place to live. With a wide range of locations, excellent quality of life, and a thriving economy, it's no surprise that many Texans who relocate choose to stay within the Lone Star State." Conn's insights reflect a broader trend observed in the shifting demographics and preferences of residents across the country.
Interestingly, while overall interstate relocations have witnessed a slight downturn, Texas maintained a solid position as a favored state for those relocating from one state to another. In 2023, Texas held 8.1% of all interstate relocations, consistently maintaining its status for two consecutive years. Florida slightly edged out Texas with 8.4% of interstate moves, while California and North Carolina followed behind, accounting for 5.6% and 4.5%, respectively.
The data reveals a notable exchange between Texas and California, which ranked first for both incoming and outgoing residents. Texas experienced a net gain of over 55,000 residents from California, a significant growth that stood as the highest for any state. Furthermore, Florida contributed a net increase of around 13,000 residents moving to Texas, further solidifying Texas’s position as a prime relocation destination.
However, the report also identified Colorado and North Carolina as states leading to a net loss of Texas residents, indicating a complex migration pattern influenced by various economic and lifestyle factors.
In total, Texas saw an increase of more than 133,000 residents from interstate migrations throughout 2023. Conn emphasized the importance of engaging a Texas REALTOR® during such transitions, stating, “Making Texas your home is an excellent decision for many people. Choosing a Texas REALTOR® for assistance in relocation is the smartest choice anyone can make. Having a local real estate expert on your team is essential, whether you're arriving, leaving, or relocating within Texas.”
The Texas Relocation Report serves as a vital resource, drawing from migration estimates based on the American Community Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, providing valuable insights into trends that influence Texas's real estate market and quality of life.
Texas REALTORS®, with over 150,000 members, act as advocates for the industry and private property rights in the state, playing a critical role in assisting residents hooked on Texas charm. Conn urges prospective movers to consider the new opportunities that life in Texas can offer, ensuring assistance through every step of the transition within this thriving state.
