Alaska University Embraces Windracers ULTRA for Remote Resupply Missions



In a bold move to enhance logistic capabilities in one of the most challenging terrains, the University of Alaska Fairbanks has partnered with Windracers, a frontrunner in autonomous cargo aircraft technology, to utilize their self-flying cargo drone, the Windracers ULTRA. This initiative aims to create efficient delivery systems for remote Alaskan communities, which often face logistical challenges due to difficult weather and geographic conditions.

Meeting the Needs of Isolated Communities



Cathy Cahill, Director of the Alaska Center for UAS Integration (ACUASI), emphasized the critical need for reliable air cargo delivery systems to support remote communities. According to Cahill, "The acquisition of the Windracers ULTRA aircraft will allow us to thoroughly test delivery possibilities, ensuring that our isolated communities receive essential supplies on time, every time."

The Windracers ULTRA is designed to cover significant distances, transporting payloads of over 100 kilograms across distances of up to 1,000 kilometers, making it an ideal solution for Alaska’s unique delivery challenges. This capability addresses the need for emergency supplies while navigating the often harsh Alaskan weather conditions.

Pioneering Research and Development



The collaboration places UAF at the forefront of drone technology research. UAF is recognized for its international efforts in research, education, and the arts, particularly concerning the circumpolar North and its populations. With ACUASI having one of the leading drone research programs in the country, the integration of Windracers ULTRA into their operations signifies a significant leap in operational capacity.

Simon Muderack, the CEO of Windracers, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, "We are honored that UAF has selected our ULTRA aircraft to pioneer their air cargo delivery initiative. Our technology is designed to not only withstand adverse conditions but also to operate at a fraction of the usual cost associated with conventional delivery methods."

The drone has successfully conducted missions that include troop resupply missions in Ukraine, geological explorations in Antarctica, and even critical medical supply deliveries in Africa.
