Florida Polytechnic University Celebrates New State Investment for Future Growth

Florida Polytechnic University Gains Momentum from State Investment

Florida Polytechnic University (Florida Poly), recognized for its dedication to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, is set to enhance its growth trajectory following the Florida Legislature's recent approval of $19 million in its 2026-2027 state budget. This investment aims to bolster student success initiatives, infrastructure enhancements, and strategic enrollment expansion, marking a significant milestone in the university's development.

Supporting Student Success: The Student Achievement Center

A notable portion of the approved funds, $10 million, will be allocated for the new Student Achievement Center (StAC). This essential campus facility, designed to be a central hub for student support, will occupy 138,400 square feet and provide a diverse range of resources aimed at enhancing student engagement and success. Services will include academic support, career planning, and professional development opportunities.

State Senator Colleen Burton, who represents a portion of Polk County, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, noting, "Florida Poly has become an important driver of student success and economic development in our region. The Student Achievement Center will strengthen that role by providing students with the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive in today's fast-changing world."

The establishment of StAC, budgeted at $85 million, is backed by a total of $27.7 million from the state over the past few years, demonstrating a solid commitment from legislative leaders to enhance educational infrastructure at Florida Poly.

Rising to 3,000: Expanding Enrollment

Another key factor impacting Florida Poly's growth is the secured funding of $7.5 million for its 'Rising to 3,000' initiative. With a strategic goal to reach 3,000 students by 2030, this initiative aims to increase enrollment in STEM disciplines further. Additionally, the university will benefit from $1.5 million set aside for operational support, providing a substantial boost in their ability to accommodate the higher student numbers.

President Dr. Devin Stephenson highlighted the significance of the investment, stating, "This funding reflects a powerful vote of confidence in our role in advancing STEM education and workforce development. We appreciate the Florida Legislature's ongoing support, which enables us to expand opportunities for students and enhance our campus experience."

The university has witnessed significant growth, with record enrollment numbers, driven by heightened interest in accessible, quality STEM education. Florida Poly stands out as Florida's only public institution exclusively dedicated to STEM disciplines, thereby catering to the evolving needs of the state's economy.

The Broader Impact on Florida's Economy

State Representative Jennifer Canady also commented on the long-term effects of supporting Florida Poly's growth—important for both student opportunities and economic advancement. "Florida Poly continues to open doors for students while strengthening the talent pipeline that will shape Florida's future economy. Supporting the university's growth is an investment in opportunities that will drive progress across our state for years to come."

The Board of Trustees is optimistic about this investment's potential for institutional advancement, viewing it as a decisive step towards Florida Poly's upcoming phase of growth. "Florida Poly's trajectory has never been stronger," stated Beth Kigel, the board's chair. She emphasized that the university is well-positioned to enhance its stature as a leading destination for STEM education, research, and discovery.

This announcement comes ahead of the July 1 implementation of the state budget and is subject to line-item vetoes by Governor Ron DeSantis. As the university gears up for this potential growth, the community eagerly anticipates the unfolding of opportunities that this investment will provide. Florida Polytechnic University is not just shaping the future of its students but also playing a pivotal role in the broader economic landscape of Florida.
