SDFM Introduces CDFM-H Credential to Enhance Defense Healthcare Financial Management Expertise

SDFM Unveils New Credential for Healthcare Financial Management

In a significant step toward enhancing financial management within the defense healthcare sector, the Society of Defense Financial Management (SDFM) has announced the launch of the Certified Defense Financial Manager – Healthcare (CDFM-H). This credential, introduced on May 28, 2025, represents a specialized addition to the standard Certified Defense Financial Manager (CDFM) program and has been collaboratively developed with the Defense Health Agency (DHA).

Bridging the Gap in Healthcare Financial Management

The introduction of the CDFM-H credential comes as the defense healthcare landscape continues to evolve, becoming increasingly intricate and resource-dependent. This new certification aims to equip financial leaders and professionals within the Military Health System (MHS) with advanced knowledge and skills required to navigate the complex financial operations inherent in defense healthcare environments. It emphasizes critical competencies in budgeting, strategic planning, operational finance, and management controls tailored specifically to the healthcare domain, setting it apart from the core CDFM program.

As Rich Brady, CEO of SDFM, highlighted, "As the defense healthcare enterprise grows in complexity and cost, so too must our capabilities in managing its resources. The CDFM-H was developed in direct response to this need—to ensure our professionals have the skills and validation necessary to lead with confidence and accountability." This initiative reflects a commitment to not just maintaining but elevating the standards of financial management within defense healthcare.

Crafting a Credential for the Impending Challenges

The CDFM-H credential addresses the escalating demand for proficient professionals who can adeptly manage the financial difficulties unique to the military and veteran healthcare systems. It is rooted in four fundamental areas of expertise:
1. Strategic Planning
2. Management Controls
3. Operational Tasks
4. CFO Leadership

By building upon the foundational skills acquired through the CDFM certification, the CDFM-H affirms a professional's ability to lead confidently in these specialized areas, thereby enhancing the operational effectiveness of the healthcare financial workforce.

Who is Eligible?

The credential is tailored for:
  • - Financial managers and analysts working with the DHA, Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs), and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
  • - Current CDFM or Certified Defense Financial Manager – Acquisition (CDFM-A) holders who wish to deepen their expertise in healthcare finance.
  • - Professionals involved in healthcare operations under the Department of Defense (DoD), VA, or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
  • - Budget and program analysts contributing to the Military Health System.

To qualify for the CDFM-H, candidates must have already earned the CDFM or CDFM-A certification. The accompanying exam will consist of 90 multiple-choice questions spanning the four aforementioned domains, providing a rigorous assessment of the candidate's knowledge and skills.

Exam Details and Future Prospects

In an effort to ensure a smooth rollout, a pilot version of the CDFM-H exam will be available at no cost, exclusively for current CDFM and CDFM-A holders starting May 28, 2025. This pilot phase is crucial for establishing a passing standard, after which the certification will be accessible year-round via SDFM.

Colonel John W. Lee, Deputy to the Assistant Director of Resources and Personnel at DHA, emphasized the significance of this certification, stating, "It’s a strategic investment in the future of our healthcare financial leaders. The CDFM-H strengthens the profession, the system, and ultimately, the mission of national security."
