Sandvik Secures Record Order for Battery-Electric Mining Equipment from South32
Sandvik's Groundbreaking Order for Battery-Electric Mining Equipment
In a landmark move for sustainable mining, Sandvik has recently secured an unprecedented order from South32, aimed at equipping the greenfield Hermosa critical minerals project in Arizona, USA with state-of-the-art underground mining equipment. This substantial order primarily comprises battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and is being touted as Sandvik's most significant contract for BEV technology to date, reflecting the company's commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability in the mining industry.
Valued at approximately SEK 750 million, the order was recorded in the second quarter of 2025 and includes a variety of equipment such as battery-electric trucks, loaders, bolters, development drills, and longhole drills. Alongside these electric innovations, the order also encompasses conventional trucks, cable bolters, and additional machinery essential for efficient mining operations.
The delivery of this cutting-edge equipment is scheduled to initiate in the fourth quarter of 2026, extending through 2030, with the majority expected to be delivered during 2026 and 2027. Mats Eriksson, the President of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, expressed pride in the role Sandvik's BEVs will play in enhancing the supply of crucial minerals and supporting the ongoing electrification of modern society. The BEVs are projected to lower fuel expenses and maintenance costs, while also extending the lifespan of the equipment, thereby facilitating a more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable mining operation at Hermosa.
The Hermosa project stands out as it is currently the only advanced mine development initiative in the U.S. with the potential to produce two federally designated critical minerals: manganese and zinc. South32 is dedicated to transforming Hermosa's zinc-lead-silver deposit into a long-term operation, anticipating the commencement of production in 2027. This strategic investment signifies a pivotal step towards achieving higher production levels while also adhering to environmental standards.
With this order, Sandvik not only reinforces its leadership in the realm of battery-electric mining solutions but also aligns with the growing global emphasis on sustainability and responsible mining practices. As more industries pivot towards eco-friendly alternatives, developments like these illuminate the potential of technological innovations to address pressing environmental challenges while meeting the ever-increasing demands for critical minerals required in various sectors.
As the mining industry continues to evolve, Sandvik's commitment to providing state-of-the-art, sustainable solutions highlights the importance of innovation in promoting both operational efficiency and environmental stewardship. Stakeholders in the sector will keenly observe the progress of the Hermosa project, as it could serve as a model for future mining endeavors aimed at balancing economic viability with ecological responsibility.
