Philips Japan Revamps HeartStart FRx Trainer for AED Training Needs

Philips Japan, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, has officially relaunched its HeartStart FRx Trainer, a vital tool for AED training. This revamped version aims to enhance preparedness among bystanders who may need to administer CPR and use an AED in emergency situations.

Cardiac arrest can strike anyone at any time, making it essential for those present to remain calm and effective during such a dire moment. Philips has meticulously designed the FRx Trainer to closely mimic the actual HeartStart FRx AED, enriching training sessions with realistic scenarios.

Major Updates to the HeartStart FRx Trainer

The most noticeable change in the new FRx Trainer is its color. Previously blue, the device now matches the familiar gray color of the actual HeartStart FRx AED. Additionally, it retains the same shape, operational mechanics, and auditory guidance as the real device, promoting a seamless transition between training and actual use.

Philips is committed to equipping not only trainers like the FRx but also a full range of AED-related equipment, facilitating effective emergency response training.

The Importance of Immediate Response

The delay in ambulance arrival has become a pressing issue, further emphasizing the need for immediate response by those nearby. The average ambulance response time has increased recently—from 10.3 minutes in 2022 to 10.0 minutes in 2023. Since survival rates drop by 7-10% for every minute that passes without defibrillation during cardiac arrest, doing everything possible to raise awareness about AED usage prior to emergency services arriving is crucial.

Statistics reveal a dramatic difference in recovery rates: when CPR and AED use are employed pre-arrival, the survival rate jumps from a mere 3.4% to 44.9%. This stark contrast highlights the importance of training and preparedness in saving lives.

Survey Highlights on AED Awareness and Training

To understand the current mindset around AED training, Philips conducted an online survey between August 2 and August 14, 2024, with 878 valid responses. The results indicated a concerning trend—69% of respondents were either unaware of the lengthening ambulance response times or had not made any preparations for such emergencies.

Further, when asked about their confidence in performing life-saving procedures, the average score was only 2.78 on a five-point scale, painting a picture of hesitance in the face of potential medical emergencies. While 43% rated themselves a low 1 to 2, only 32% felt confident enough to score 4 or 5.

The Role of Regular Training

According to the Japan Resuscitation Council's 2020 guidelines, frequent training every 1-2 years greatly improves skill retention, efficacy in rescuing others, and confidence in performing life-saving tasks. Many respondents still believe that installing an AED is enough, but consistent training tailored to emergency scenarios is pivotal.

Practicing with Realistic Training Tools

The survey also showed 99% of participants recognized the effectiveness of practicing with actual AEDs or the FRx Trainer, emphasizing real-life application in training scenarios. Philips designed its FRx Trainer to replicate the look and functionality of its actual AED counterpart, offering accurate guidance for CPR techniques and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) rhythms, as well as allowing for repeated practice with reusable training pads.

Moreover, the trainer operates on standard AAA batteries, making it cost-effective for regular use. Its familiar design is advantageous not only for domestic responders but also for international visitors who may be more accustomed to the HeartStart's appearance.
