Annual Benefit Dinner at Freed-Hardeman University

On December 5, 2025, Freed-Hardeman University (FHU) proudly hosted its 61st Annual Benefit Dinner, which impressively raised $1,478,642 for student scholarships. This year's event marked a significant milestone, as it continued a remarkable trend by surpassing the $1 million mark for the 25th consecutive year. The memorable evening featured retired four-star General Stanley McChrystal as the keynote speaker, captivating attendees with his insights on leadership and character, drawn from his esteemed military career.

FHU President David R. Shannon opened the evening by emphasizing the critical role this event plays in providing access to education for countless students, made possible through the generous contributions that pour in each year. "Thank you so much for being a part of it," he said, highlighting the dinner's importance not only as a fundraising event but also as a means of fostering a supportive community.

Guests were treated to a delightful experience, enjoying a beautifully catered dinner prepared and served by FHU students, staff, and dedicated volunteers at the Brewer Sports Center and Hope Barber Shull Academic Resource Center. The festive atmosphere also included a Merry Market, sponsored by the FHU Associates, featuring local vendors offering a variety of handcrafted goods, from clothing and jewelry to ornamental decorations and baked treats.

The program in the Dryden Auditorium kicked off with a lively performance by The Hardeman Boys, a musical group with historical ties to FHU since 1982. Their four-part harmonies enchanted the audience, culminating in a heartfelt rendition of "God Bless the USA," which received a standing ovation, reflecting the spirit of gratitude and pride within the community.

President Shannon also took the opportunity to discuss the ongoing FHU NEXT capital campaign, aimed at enhancing the campus infrastructure. Since its inception five years ago, the campaign has remarkably raised over $170 million in cash and pledges. It has funded numerous major projects, including the Jones Family Dining Hall and the Dr. Elizabeth Saunders Center, alongside renovations to housing and athletic facilities. "God has done things in ways that we never dreamt," Shannon expressed, highlighting the university's growth and development.

In his keynote address, General McChrystal shared invaluable lessons from his time leading U.S. forces in Afghanistan, focusing on the importance of character in leadership. He remarked, "The Greek philosopher Heraclitus says that 'character is our fate,' and I think that's true." He articulated that true character comes to light in our actions and behaviors, particularly in challenging situations.

McChrystal's message was clear: to build a life enriched by service to others, surrounded by individuals of strong character. He encouraged all attendees to foster integrity, compassion, and a commitment to serving those around them.

As the evening drew to a close, Scott E. Latham, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, expressed deep gratitude to everyone present, recognizing their role in nurturing an environment conducive to Christian education. He acknowledged the university's commitment to developing students of character and community.
