Survey Reveals Travelers' Anxiety Ahead of Summer Air Travel and Bag Handling Challenges

The Growing Dread for Summer Air Travel: Key Findings from ShipPlay's Survey

As the summer travel season approaches, the mood among air travelers in the U.S. is anything but optimistic. A recent survey by ShipPlay, a door-to-door luggage and gear shipping service, unveils the growing anxiety surrounding flights as individuals prepare for what many expect to be a profoundly stressful airport experience. The survey, conducted on a sample of 1,000 adults who have flown within the last year, highlights key concerns that are shaping travel plans this summer.

Travelers Arrive Early: An Increasing Trend

Americans are bracing themselves for the lines, delays, and fees associated with flying. On average, survey respondents stated that they plan to arrive at the airport nearly two hours earlier than they normally would, citing an average time of 116 minutes. A significant 40% of travelers are budgeting an additional two or more hours before their flights, reflecting a profound lack of confidence in the airport process. Past experiences have conditioned travelers to expect longer wait times, as their last airport visit averaged 76 minutes from entrance to gate.

When segmented by generation, Gen X travelers indicated they would allocate the most time (125 minutes), with Baby Boomers following closely at 122 minutes, while Millennials planned for slightly less time, averaging around 106 minutes.

The Top Fears of Air Travelers

Concerns about security and crowds abound, but the survey results illustrate the pressing fears that plague travelers:
  • - Long lines: 61% expressed dread about facing lengthy queues.
  • - Delayed or canceled flights: 57% worry about interruptions to their travel plans.
  • - Unexpected fees: 42% are anxious about the costs of checking bags and additional charges.
  • - Lost luggage: 33% fear their belongings won't arrive as expected.
  • - Gate-checked carry-ons: 33% are worried that their carry-on baggage may not make it onboard.

These statistics reveal a troubling trend: luggage-related concerns are not isolated but widespread, particularly as 75% of travelers recognize the significant impact these issues have on their journeys.

A Bleak Outlook on Airline Policies

The survey paints a dire picture of the future travel landscape. A staggering 81% of respondents believe airlines will impose stricter carry-on rules and increase checked baggage fees in the forthcoming year. This view is consistent across demographics, showing a universal distrust in how airlines will manage luggage and fees.

Willingness to Adapt: Shipping Luggage Instead

Perhaps the most notable revelation from the survey is the openness among travelers to explore alternative solutions for managing their luggage. About 59% indicated they would prefer to ship their luggage directly to their destination with tracking and insurance rather than checking it at the airport, with Millennials showing the highest inclination at 65%. Men, too, expressed greater interest compared to women, with 67% favoring this route versus 53%.

This inclination to ship instead of check is particularly noteworthy among those who harbor significant anxiety regarding bag fees and the risk of gate-checks, suggesting that the demand for innovative luggage solutions is on the rise.

As Jonathan Marsico, co-founder and CEO of ShipPlay, aptly stated, “This summer, travelers aren’t just packing bags, they’re packing anxiety.” The data suggests that travelers are acutely aware of the challenges ahead, with expectations for longer waits, increased costs, and a general atmosphere of uncertainty dominating their minds as they contemplate their summer travel.

Methodology and Background of the Survey

Conducted by Talker Research from May 7-12, 2026, the survey employed a double opt-in methodology to secure responses from a diverse range of U.S. adults. The findings are weighted to ensure they accurately reflect the national population and reflect ongoing challenges in air travel that continue to affect millions.

ShipPlay, established in 2011, aims to create a concierge shipping experience that allows travelers to avoid the burdens of heavy or cumbersome luggage. They provide targeted solutions for transporting sports equipment and other gear, showing how evolving expectations can shape the travel landscape.

With these insights, travelers can better prepare for their summer journeys with realistic expectations, considering alternatives that suit their needs and alleviate travel stress.
