Introduction
In a bid to revolutionize Japan's logistics and delivery services, Japan Post, JP Digital, and GMO MakeShop have announced an exciting new initiative. With the increasing demands of e-commerce and the need for efficient delivery solutions, this project aims to leverage the innovative concept of 'Digital Addresses' and the widely accessible 'PUDO Stations'. Officially recognized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, this initiative is expected to play a key role in reducing logistics burdens and enhancing delivery methods across the nation.
Background
As Japan’s e-commerce market expands, the volume of parcel deliveries has significantly surged. However, challenges such as delivery reattempts, a shortage of drivers, and escalating delivery burdens in the final mile have intensified issues within the logistics sector. Consequently, there’s a growing demand for diverse pickup options, including parcel lockers and in-store pickups. Yet, e-commerce companies struggle with high system integration demands related to the implementation of such options, hindering widespread adoption. Moreover, users often find it challenging to identify the available pickup locations on user interfaces. To tackle these obstacles, the partnership of Japan Post, JP Digital, GMO MakeShop, and Packcity Japan aims to validate the feasibility of a receiving environment utilizing Digital Addresses.
Overview of the Initiative
The project is set to commence in November 2026, focusing on maximizing the benefits of Digital Addresses in enhancing the customer experience at PUDO Stations. With around 7,000 PUDO Stations already installed nationwide by Packcity Japan, this initiative will streamline the parcel reception experience and establish a common infrastructure to assess the efficacy and scalability of Digital Addresses. The goal is to create a user-friendly environment for consumers while simplifying the implementation process for businesses.
Roles of the Companies
- - Japan Post: Responsible for the project management and overall framework involving Digital Addresses.
- - JP Digital: Tasked with the system development related to the Digital Address framework.
- - GMO MakeShop: In charge of designing and implementing the customer pickup experience on e-commerce platforms to encourage the use of diverse delivery methods.
- - Packcity Japan: Provides PUDO Stations and will oversee the setup of the verification environment, facilitating user engagement strategies.
Together, these four companies will evaluate the effectiveness of diverse delivery methods. Their aim is to contribute to resolving social issues within the logistics sector while fostering an environment that enhances convenience for users and ease of implementation for service providers.
About Digital Addresses
In alignment with Japan Post's vision to make address-related experiences more convenient, the 'Digital Address' service was launched in May 2025. Designed to reduce the complexities of conventional addresses, Digital Addresses are expressed as a concise 7-digit alphanumeric code, thereby eliminating the hassle of long addresses. Users can simply input their Digital Address and link it to their pre-registered address information, easing the burden of daily address input.
Once registered, users can maintain the same Digital Address even after moving, just by updating their registered information. This continuity streamlines communication of addresses among family, friends, and service providers, improving overall efficiency. Furthermore, privacy is a paramount consideration; the structure of Digital Addresses ensures that geographical or personal details are not directly disclosed, safeguarding personal information from potential misuse.
PUDO Stations: A Closer Look
PUDO Stations, strategically located across approximately 7,000 sites as of July 2026, enable users to receive and ship parcels in a contactless and non-face-to-face manner at their convenience. These smart lockers support multiple delivery service providers, enhancing last-mile delivery efficiency while reduce unnecessary costs and waste associated with re-delivery. By expanding the smart locker service, this initiative aims to fundamentally improve the parcel delivery environment in Japan.
This collaboration among Japan Post, JP Digital, GMO MakeShop, and Packcity Japan marks a significant shift in addressing the challenges faced by the logistics industry, and is anticipated to pave the way for a more flexible, efficient, and user-friendly delivery system in the near future.
