Celebrating 35 Years of Friendship Place

On September 17, 2026, Friendship Place will host its 35th Anniversary Gala at the Conrad Washington, DC, a pivotal event that honors community leaders who have made significant strides in combating homelessness in the region.

Founded in 1991 by a dedicated group of neighbors, Friendship Place has evolved from a small organization to a vital resource that provides services to over 5,400 individuals annually. The gala will reflect on the organization’s growth and the impact it has had through its innovative housing services, employment programs, and community outreach.

Under the leadership of Jean-Michel Giraud, who has served as the President and CEO for two decades, Friendship Place has implemented transformative programs like Veterans First, which is in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and various permanent supportive housing initiatives. These programs have not only offered housing solutions but have also instilled hope and restored dignity to countless individuals experiencing homelessness. Giraud’s dedication to this cause earned him the prestigious Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur and recognition as one of Washingtonian magazine's Washingtonians of the Year.

The gala will also honor other remarkable individuals for their contributions to alleviating homelessness in the district. These include Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, recognized for her advocacy for affordable housing and homelessness services; Sue Marshall, the founding executive director of The Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, who has shaped DC’s response to homelessness; and Carole Evans, a talented violinist with the National Symphony Orchestra and leader of the Music of Friends concert series that has brought critical awareness and funding to Friendship Place.

“This event represents years of collaboration and hard work aimed at addressing homelessness in our region,” said David Dirks, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Each honoree embodies the spirit of our organization, emphasizing compassion and community support.”

The event will commence with a reception at 6:00 PM, where attendees will gather to honor these individuals while enjoying dinner, drinks, and a program that recognizes their invaluable contributions to the community.

Friendship Place’s influence extends beyond providing shelter; it empowers people to rebuild their lives through a tailored approach that addresses the unique challenges faced by individuals, families, veterans, and youth. By integrating housing, employment services, health care, and behavioral health, Friendship Place fosters lasting stability and change.
