Pacific Consultants Support Symposium on Disaster Preparedness
On March 21, 2026, a symposium titled "15 Years After the Great East Japan Earthquake and Future of Bosai" will be held in Otemachi, Tokyo. This significant event marks the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, a disaster that reshaped the landscape of disaster response and preparedness in Japan. The symposium is being co-hosted by the World Disaster Prevention Forum and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science at Tohoku University.
Looking Back and Forward
It has been 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, leading to numerous initiatives for recovery and reconstruction in the affected areas. Despite these efforts, the risk of large-scale disasters, such as the Nankai Trough Earthquake and the Tokyo Metropolitan Area Earthquake, remains high. Additionally, challenges posed by climate change are exacerbating the severity of torrential rains, floods, and landslides, further emphasizing the necessity for disaster prevention and mitigation.
The symposium aims to reflect on the experiences of the past 15 years while contemplating the future of disaster preparedness (Bosai). Key participants include executives and experts from Pacific Consultants, who have actively engaged in recovery projects following the disaster. They have maintained a collaborative relationship with Tohoku University’s International Research Institute of Disaster Science since signing a memorandum in 2017 to promote the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
A Session on Infrastructure and Urban Design
One of the highlights of the event will be a discussion session titled "What can be done through Infrastructure Design and Urban Design?" Scheduled to take place from 14:35 to 16:20, it will feature Ryoji Hirakawa, Chief Engineer at Pacific Consultants, and Hiroki Yagi, Director of the Public Space Design Division at Nikken Sekkei’s Urban and Social Infrastructure Department.
