LG Energy Solution Vertech Partners with DTE Energy for 6GWh Battery Projects in Michigan

Introduction

In a significant move towards enhancing energy reliability, LG Energy Solution Vertech has recently inked a deal with DTE Energy to supply 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage systems. This partnership is set to transform how electricity is managed in Michigan by developing battery systems across eight different projects.

The Agreement

The agreement encompasses eight energy storage projects located throughout Michigan, which are crucial to bolstering the state's grid reliability. LG Energy Solution commits to delivering these battery systems over a two-year timeframe. The total capacity of these systems amounts to 1.5 gigawatts, or as stated earlier, 6 GWh of energy storage. This initiative is particularly important as it allows the storage of excess generation during periods of high production and redistributes this power when customer demand peaks. This reduces the grid's strain and prevents the frequent starting and stopping of power generation that typically accompanies fluctuating demand.

CEO of LG Energy Solution Vertech, Jaehong Park, emphasizes the importance of Michigan as a manufacturing hub for the company, stating, "Michigan is a key U.S. manufacturing region, where many of our colleagues live and work." This project not only aims to enhance technological capabilities within the region but also to create job opportunities in advanced roles that align with national energy needs.

Made in Michigan

A key aspect of this collaboration is the commitment to sourcing battery cells from facilities located in Michigan as well as other sites across the U.S. and Canada. This dedication to domestic production showcases LG Energy Solution's focus on community investment and support for local economies.

DTE Energy's CEO, Joi Harris, echoes a similar sentiment on the importance of sustainable development in Michigan.

"By working with LG Energy Solution Vertech to bring more battery storage online through LG Energy Solution's Michigan manufacturing facility, we're keeping Michigan at the forefront of technology and economic opportunity," Harris said.

Clean Energy Commitment

DTE Energy’s commitment to responsible data center development significantly enhances the viability of battery energy storage in Michigan. The utility has strategically identified the necessary resources to ensure reliable service to new data center customers without sacrificing anything for existing customers, all while adhering to Michigan's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and Clean Energy Standard (CES).

For instance, an approved contract for Oracle’s data center in Saline Township includes funding for battery storage systems that will fulfill DTE’s obligations under the state's clean energy mandates for 2030. This not only benefits DTE’s clientele but also contributes to broader environmental goals.

Conclusion

The partnership between LG Energy Solution Vertech and DTE Energy marks a substantial leap towards establishing a more resilient, sustainable, and economically prosperous Michigan. By leveraging local manufacturing capabilities and focusing on renewable energy strategies, both companies are playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of energy in the region and beyond.
