The City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has once again proven its academic prowess by featuring prominently in the recently published ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2026. This year, the university achieved an impressive milestone by having 22 of its subjects ranked among the world’s Top 50. CityUHK's performance in these subjects was not only impressive but also balanced across all five evaluation categories used in the ranking: World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration. Notably, in areas like Library and Information Science and Public Administration, CityUHK demonstrated a well-rounded capability, consistently ranking within the global top 50 across all evaluated categories.
In total, CityUHK saw an expansion of its ranked subjects to 44, a two-subject increase from last year. Out of these, an impressive 27 subjects are now in the world's Top 100, and 22 have earned a place in the Top 50. The subjects that secured the number one rank in Hong Kong include Library and Information Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Public Administration, Automation Control, Environmental Science and Engineering, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Veterinary Sciences.
This year’s ranking illustrates a progressive trend for CityUHK, coinciding with its previous achievement of being ranked within the world’s Top 100 for the second consecutive year in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026, where it was placed 95th globally and second in Hong Kong. The findings from the GRAS 2026 further signify CityUHK’s potential in advancing international research, facilitating cross-disciplinary innovations, and enhancing its academic influence, securing a prominent position not just in Hong Kong but throughout Asia.
