Powerbox Unveils a Series of Rugged DC/DC Converters for Defense Applications
In an exciting development for the defense sector, Powerbox (PRBX), a leading name in advanced power supplies, has officially introduced its latest series of rugged DC/DC converters, known as the ECDD series. These converters are specifically engineered for demanding environments, including military vehicles and mobile systems. Designed to function reliably amidst unstable electrical conditions, the ECDD series promises consistent performance even during voltage fluctuations, transitional states, and engine start conditions.
The ECDD series employs conduction cooling through a base plate and features a fully sealed enclosure rated at IP65. This design facilitates fanless operation, making it ideal for enclosed systems where forced airflow isn't an option. The ruggedized structure enables the converters to withstand shocks, vibrations, and moisture, which are common in defense applications.
This innovative series includes three distinct models catering to 28 V platforms: two models with 250 W output and one with 350 W. Each version is meticulously designed to maintain stable output voltage in the event of voltage dips and transient disturbances that could potentially disrupt operation or lead to electronic resets. With an input voltage range of 11–33 VDC or 18–33 VDC, depending on the model, the ECDD series offers output capabilities of up to 350 W with an impressive efficiency of up to 92%.
To meet the stringent requirements of the defense industry, the ECDD converters utilize MIL-D38999 connectors and are manufactured in compliance with the MIL-STD-1275 D/E/F and MIL-STD-704 standards. Moreover, they conform to MIL-STD-461G and are qualified under MIL-STD-810H, which covers resistance to shocks and vibrations. Integrated protection and control features include safeguards against over-voltage, over-temperature, over-load, and short circuits. Additionally, the converters are equipped with remote on/off capabilities and monitoring functions to assist integration with mobile power systems.
"The ECDD series is designed to provide stable output power under voltage instability conditions," said Tetsuya Nagai, Vice President of R&D and Products at Powerbox. "It combines a robust mechanical design with reliable operation in challenging environments." This new range is specifically tailored for military vehicle systems, surveillance systems, unmanned platforms, and other mobile applications that operate under demanding conditions. Test units of the ECDD series are available upon request, ensuring that potential clients can experience their superior performance firsthand.
