South University Welcomes Benjamin J. DeGweck as New CEO and Chancellor
South University is entering a new phase with the recent appointment of Benjamin J. DeGweck as its new Chief Executive Officer and Chancellor. Officially assuming the position on October 31, 2025, DeGweck brings over two decades of diverse experience in higher education, legal affairs, and strategic organizational development.
Prior to his new role, DeGweck served as Vice President and General Counsel at Education Affiliates Inc., a private post-secondary institution with around 13,000 students. In that capacity, he played a critical role in legal operations, navigating complex regulatory systems and ensuring compliance across educational programs. His leadership portfolio also includes key positions at another national education organization where he oversaw litigation, managed real estate initiatives, and provided guidance on various compliance matters.
Dr. Brock Howard Haas, a member of the Board of Trustees, expressed confidence in DeGweck's capability to steer South University towards a bright future. His extensive background in education and legal frameworks offers an ideal blend of skills necessary for leading the institution at this critical juncture. "Ben’s deep experience in both higher education and legal affairs makes him an exceptional choice to lead South University," said Haas.
A significant part of DeGweck's vision for South University is a commitment to fostering a student-centered culture. He intends to prioritize empowering faculty and staff, which he believes is fundamental to enhancing the educational experience. "My vision for South University is to build on its strong foundation of excellence by expanding academic offerings and investing in our people," DeGweck remarked, emphasizing the importance of making every student feel valued and adequately challenged.
DeGweck's leadership arrives at a pivotal moment for South University, which has a legacy of providing educational opportunities since 1899. With accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to offer a wide range of degrees, including associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, the university is poised for strategic growth under his direction.
The university operates multiple campuses and provides various programs through an online platform designed to reach a wider audience. As technology and educational trends evolve, DeGweck is set to harness these changes to adapt and enhance the student experience further.
DeGweck holds a Juris Doctor degree and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama, along with a Master’s in Business Administration from New England College of Business and Finance. His scholarly background complements his professional journey, reinforcing his qualifications to lead South University in its mission to provide a robust educational framework to its current and future students.
As Benjamin J. DeGweck sets forth in his new role, the South University community anticipates a new chapter reinforcing their commitment to academic excellence and student achievement.
