BT-PACKER™: The Innovative Folding Hazardous Waste Collection Box

Introduction

In recent years, lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in smartphones and portable chargers, have become a significant concern in waste management due to their potential fire hazards. The increasing quantity of discarded batteries has led to a rise in fires in collection vehicles and processing facilities across Japan. Despite this pressing issue, safe and efficient methods for collecting used batteries remain elusive, leaving municipalities and private companies to face numerous challenges. In response, Morita Ekonos, in collaboration with Sando Transportation and Kikuchi Sheet Industry, has developed the BT-PACKER™ — a foldable hazardous waste collection box that emphasizes practical safety and usability in the field.

Overview of BT-PACKER™

The BT-PACKER™ is specifically designed for municipalities and private enterprises engaged in waste collection operations. Its unique structure includes four layers of protective materials, allowing for the safe isolation, storage, and transport of used lithium-ion batteries and small appliances containing them. By minimizing the risks posed by battery fires, the BT-PACKER™ aims to reduce human injury and damage to collection vehicles and equipment, ensuring community safety and business continuity (BCP).

Key Features

1. High Level of Protection

Lithium-ion batteries can experience thermal runaway, potentially reaching temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius, which can result in flames and the release of high-temperature gases. The BT-PACKER™ integrates four distinct types of protective materials to suppress these extreme reactions, thereby minimizing their impact on the surrounding environment. This design also mitigates external risks, such as water damage or trauma, that could lead to ignitions.

1. Layer 1: Aluminum-coated aramid blend (fire-resistant, cut-resistant, stain-resistant)
- This robust material is resistant to cuts and can easily be cleaned, ensuring longevity and usability even after contact with damaged collection materials.

2. Layer 2: Fire-resistant felt (fire-resistant, shock-absorbent)
- Provides cushioning during collection and transport, lessening vibrations and shocks.

3. Layer 3: Fire-resistant FRP (fire-resistant, puncture-resistant, load-bearing)
- Protects against debris during battery ignitions and maintains the integrity of the box's shape.

4. Layer 4: Flame-retardant truck tarp (fire-resistant, water-resistant, cut-resistant)
- Offers protection from rainwater and ensures durability during handling.

Note: Internal tests confirmed that the box adequately withstands flames without penetration when exposed to a flame of 1,550°C for one minute under specific conditions.

2. Foldable Design

The BT-PACKER™ can be easily folded into a compact size when not in use, allowing for efficient storage. Its versatile design permits use not only in waste collection but also as an emergency isolation box in public transportation facilities during unforeseen battery ignition incidents.

3. Additional Features

  • - It can be stacked up to three units high under optimal usage conditions.
  • - Free from metal components, it resists corrosion and prevents short circuits caused by contact with batteries.
  • - The lid is secured with three buckles to minimize damage in the event of an internal fire.

Specifications

  • - Dimensions: 480mm (W) × 280mm (D) × 280mm (H) when expanded; 480mm (W) × 70mm (D) × 280mm (H) when folded.
  • - Weight: 2.6 kg
  • - Maximum load capacity: 17.4 kg
  • - Volume: 30 L

Disclaimer: The BT-PACKER™ is designed to minimize the impact of fires caused by stored waste; it does not suppress or extinguish fires on its own. Its protective capabilities are effective only when the lid is closed and the buckles are secured. The product is reusable, but if it suffers damage or if an internal fire occurs, cease use immediately and replace with a new unit.

Launch and Pricing

The BT-PACKER™ will be available for purchase starting February 2026. For pricing details, please contact Morita Ekonos branches or sales offices.

Future Developments

Morita Ekonos aims to expand the BT-PACKER™'s application throughout the waste collection industry and in public transport systems, municipal facilities, and private enterprises, contributing to a safer and more sustainable community.
