Consumers Energy Offers Heating Bill Assistance to Seniors Amid Winter Challenges

Consumers Energy's Initiative for Seniors Facing Heating Costs

As winter takes a toll on households across Michigan, particularly with colder-than-usual temperatures, many residents are grappling with soaring heating bills. In response to this pressing issue, Consumers Energy has launched an initiative aimed specifically at supporting senior citizens aged 65 and older who are facing financial strain due to increased heating costs.

On March 10 and March 12, the energy provider plans to conduct direct outreach by calling seniors whose accounts are at least $200 in arrears. This proactive approach will allow the company to review account details with these customers and offer information regarding enrollment in payment assistance programs designed to ease their financial burden.

To further enhance their outreach efforts, Consumers Energy is also utilizing emails and postcards to communicate with senior customers. Last year, the company successfully contacted over 20,000 seniors, and the expectation for this winter is to reach even more individuals in need of support.

"For many of our senior customers living on fixed incomes, every additional cost can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to ensure that every senior knows they have the resources and support necessary to manage their heating expenses," stated Lauren Snyder, Senior Vice President of Consumers Energy. She emphasized that the company recognizes the unique challenges faced by older adults and is committed to providing not just financial assistance but also guidance through available options.

Shut-off protections are currently in effect for seniors from now until April 1, providing some security as financial strain rises. Nonetheless, assistance is available for all customers who require help with their heating bills, and outreach specifically targeting seniors will continue until March 31.

To qualify for this support, customers must be 65 years or older and have an overdue account balance of $200 or more. Customers already enrolled in an installment or CARE plan are not eligible, but those who meet the criteria can call 1-800-477-5050 to discuss available options tailored to their circumstances.

This initiative is part of a broader effort initiated by Consumers Energy to address the impact of recent weather patterns that have seen many residents faced with higher monthly charges as they seek to keep their homes warm. Earlier in January, the company had already committed a significant $5 million investment to help customers navigate their energy costs.

Additionally, Consumers Energy encourages residents to explore the Home Heating Credit, along with various customizable solutions, ensuring customers can find a plan tailored to their financial needs.

Consumers Energy is Michigan's foremost energy provider, delivering natural gas and electricity to approximately 6.8 million of the state's 10 million inhabitants across all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
