The Return of the Aretha Series: A Long-Awaited Reunion Through Crowdfunding
After over three decades of silence, the nostalgic RPG series,
Aretha, is poised for revival through an exciting new initiative spearheaded by
Yanoman Co., Ltd. and
Japan Art Media (JAM). Launched between 1990 and 1995, the Aretha games captured the hearts of many, and fans can finally look forward to re-engaging with this beloved universe through a crowdfunding project named "Aretha Reunion Project: I Want to Meet Again," kicking off on
July 15, 2026 at 9 PM on
CAMPFIRE. This project will run until
August 31, 2026, using an innovative “All-in” funding approach which guarantees returns regardless of the fundraising goal.
What is the Aretha Reunion Project?
Announced on
March 13, 2026, the Aretha Reunion Project aims to bridge the gap between the silent years of the RPG series and the longings of its fans. The initial announcement marked a moment of rekindled excitement as the creators, together with their supporters, seek to explore and reconnect with the cherished world and characters of Aretha that have lingered fondly in memories.
Backstory of the Project's Launch
The journey to the revival of Aretha unexpectedly began with a simple phone call in 2024. As part of
Yanoman's 70th-anniversary celebrations, a chance discussion between the hobby division and former staff set in motion a series of fortunate events leading to the project’s inception. Following this, several opportunities for fans to reconnect transpired. Notably, in
August 2025, the event "True Yanoman Legend: Aretha Special" allowed loyal fans to rediscover their favorite elements, with
November 2025 seeing outreach efforts to locate former illustrators responsible for the original Aretha illustrations.
Goals for the Reunion Project
The project intends to achieve several milestones:
1. Preserving a Legendary Series for Modern Platforms
The original Aretha games released on
Game Boy and
Super Famicom will be remastered to enable gameplay on contemporary platforms like the
Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and
Steam. The first landmark step,
Aretha COLLECTION 1993-1995, is already set for release on
July 30, 2026. A subsequent collection for the
Game Boy titles, titled
Aretha COLLECTION 1990-1992 (working title), is the goal of this crowdfunding effort.
2. Launching the Official Aretha Jigsaw Puzzle
Despite being a jigsaw puzzle pioneer, Yanoman has yet to release an Aretha-themed jigsaw puzzle. This project seeks to revive the stunning visuals of Aretha in premium quality as a puzzle for a new generation.
3. Connecting with Fans Through New Comics and Art Books
The project will also feature a new comic booklet illustrated by acclaimed artist
Yoshito Asari and produce the
Aretha Official Art Book, encapsulating the beauty of the game’s universe.
4. Compiling the Aretha World Core
In a collaborative effort, a comprehensive guide called
ARETHA World Core will be compiled. Unlike traditional guides, this project invites fans to contribute their interpretations and narratives, establishing a rich, shared history of the Aretha world. Supporters can even have their names listed on the project's official website.
Future Aspirations
The project aspires to take several significant steps towards future developments, including a new animated film (OVA), a fresh drama CD, and ultimately, the launch of an all-platform compatible game.
Support and Rewards
The crowdfunding initiative presents various support tiers, ranging from
30,000 to 70,000 yen for title support and
10,000 yen for individual character support, with each tier offering distinct rewards tied to different aspects of the project.
Stretch Goals
As funding milestones are met, exciting content will be realized, including:
1. Thank you messages and character registration into the Aretha kingdom for all supporters.
2. A new mangamodel by Yoshito Asari.
3. Special merchandise such as a reunion T-shirt and unique scenario PDFs.
4. Development of high-quality products like the Aretha official jigsaw puzzle and art book once financing thresholds are surpassed.
Timeline and Crowdfunding Details
The project kicks off on
July 15 and will last until
August 31, 2026. It is co-managed by Yanoman and JAM, with all funding aimed at producing merchandise, animations, and game development.
