PleoPharma's Groundbreaking Research on Cannabis Withdrawal in Women
PleoPharma, Inc., a clinical-stage enterprise concentrating on cannabis-related health challenges, has recently announced significant findings from a survey conducted on women engaging in frequent cannabis use. The results will be presented on October 22, 2026, during The Menopause Society’s Annual Meeting in San Diego. This initiative illustrates a growing concern: the experiences of women attempting to lessen or cease cannabis consumption, especially underlining withdrawal symptoms they encounter.
The survey, which involved 146 women who either sought to reduce their cannabis intake or completely stop use, provides profound insights into the complexities of cannabis withdrawal. Notably, the data reveal that an alarming 90% of participants reported experiencing at least one withdrawal symptom following cessation. A considerable portion of respondents—61%—noted that withdrawal symptoms commenced swiftly, within merely 24 hours of their last consumption, with 12% experiencing them within just three hours.
Furthermore, a substantial 84% of the surveyed women sought medical support for managing withdrawal symptoms or for assistance in cutting back on their cannabis use. Among these women, around two-thirds expressed interest in medication-assisted treatments to help alleviate withdrawal or cannabis use disorder (CUD). These findings highlight the rising prevalence of cannabis use disorder among women, particularly those in midlife and older.
National data from recent years indicates a concerning trend, revealing a doubling in moderate to severe cannabis use disorder cases among women aged 35 to 49, and an astonishing sevenfold increase among those aged 50 and above between 2021 and 2024.
Dr. Shelli Graham, Senior Vice President of Clinical Research and Medical Affairs at PleoPharma, emphasized the importance of this survey, stating, "This research expands the body of evidence regarding women's experiences with cannabis dependence. It underscores the urgent need for products that assist women wishing to reduce their cannabis consumption."
PleoPharma is pioneering efforts to develop an investigational medication, termed PP-01. This prospective treatment aims to act as a daily oral solution targeting cannabis withdrawal symptoms in individuals grappling with cannabis use disorder. The company’s commitment to addressing cannabis addiction and related health issues is evident not only in this research but also in their broader objectives within addiction medicine.
The team at PleoPharma boasts an outstanding management group along with a board of directors that has successfully facilitated numerous high-value exits, amassed over 50 product approvals worldwide, and directed over 100 Investigational New Drug (IND) applications. Their vision centers around providing effective solutions to individuals facing cannabis addiction, thus enhancing the quality of life for many who struggle with this condition.
As the landscape of cannabis usage continues to evolve, particularly among women, PleoPharma's insights could play a pivotal role in shaping future treatment methodologies. The hope is that with further research and development, possibilities for effective interventions will emerge that cater specifically to the needs of women who desire to reclaim control over their cannabis use.
