Marubeni Power and Sun Village's New Energy Storage Venture

In a significant announcement, Marubeni Power, a fully owned subsidiary of Marubeni Corporation based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has partnered with Sun Village, based in Ashikaga, Tochigi, to launch a comprehensive energy storage solution tailored for grid applications. This innovative full-package product aims to establish a seamless development and aggregation operation in energy storage systems, with a target of securing 100MW of orders by the year 2025.

Addressing Industry Challenges

The energy storage system market in Japan has faced various challenges, particularly in the successful operation of grid-scale batteries. The operation includes a complex series of negotiations and adjustments due to issues such as site development, battery selection, energy management system (EMS) configuration, as well as discussions with transmission and distribution operators. Consequently, project delays are often reported, making this process significantly more difficult than developing solar power plants.

To tackle these challenges head-on, the collaboration between Marubeni Power and Sun Village has crafted a solution that covers all necessary aspects for developing and operating grid-scale energy storage systems. Sun Village will provide essential services including land access for storage systems and the execution of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services. Additionally, they will handle Operations and Maintenance (O&M) for the storage system installations. On the other hand, Marubeni Power will oversee trial operations, manage general transmission and distribution collaboration, and handle aggregation tasks. This unified approach aims to facilitate a smoother development, construction, and operational process.

Future Plans and Collaborations

Moreover, the two companies have ambitious plans to engage with financial institutions and insurance companies to offer complementary financing and insurance services. This will not only bolster the financial viability of energy storage projects but also ensure that their clients have access to a one-stop solution for their battery storage needs.
