Enhancing Research Collaboration: A Look Inside Okayama University's Workshop on Cryo Electron Microscopy and FIB-SEM



On March 6, 2026, Okayama University, a prominent national university in Japan, organized a hybrid workshop focused on the latest advancements in cryo electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) and Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM). This event, titled "Synergy Session for the Promotion of Regional Core and Distinctive Research Universities (J-PEAKS) at Okayama University - Workshop on Cryo Electron Microscopy and FIB-SEM", took place at the Tsushima Campus, specifically in the Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE) and the Collaborative Education Commons (OUX).

The workshop aimed to foster collaboration in research, connecting researchers from academia and industry to leverage the newly introduced Cryo-EM technologies in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. The Cryo-EM technology, known as "Krios G4", was first introduced in February 2024, while the Cryo-EM FIB-SEM, named "Arctis", marked its debut in Western Japan in November 2025. Over 100 attendees from various backgrounds participated, including researchers, technical staff, and industry representatives, and engaged in enriching discussions on recent endeavors related to cryo electron microscopy.

The workshop commenced with a guided tour of the facilities housing the Arctis FIB-SEM system at KIBINOVE, where participants learned about the innovative technology firsthand. The excitement was palpable as attendees absorbed the insights offered by the presenters, delving deep into the workings of the equipment.

During the second segment, Okayama University's President, Yoshitomo Nasu, highlighted the significance of network formation arising from the shared utilization of equipment, emphasizing the workshop's goal of building an academic network across related research fields. He encouraged participants to reach out to the university for assistance concerning research facilities and talent development.

Following the opening remarks, there were presentations from academic professionals utilizing the cryo electron microscope for groundbreaking investigations. For instance, Ryohei Sasaki from Hokkaido University's Institute for Research on Genetic Diseases discussed "Structural Analysis of the Ribosome De-UFMylation Mechanism." Meanwhile, Naoki Ishimoto from Yokohama City University presented findings on "Structural Biological Research on the Mechanisms of Multidrug Resistance Transfer between Bacteria". Finally, Yuki Anraku from Shionogi & Co., Ltd. discussed "Structure-Based Drug Design Utilizing Cryo Electron Microscopy," covering a variety of perspectives on how this advanced technology can be applied to research and development.

The third part of the event featured a consultation session for those interested, allowing them to inquire about practical applications and utilization strategies for the cryo electron microscope. Associate Professor Nobutaka Numamoto and his colleagues provided thorough explanations, ensuring that participants left with valuable knowledge.

Okayama University remains committed to reinforcing research foundations and promoting shared utilization networks in alignment with the J-PEAKS initiative. The university is eager to continue its role as a regional hub of distinct and innovative research, pledging to advance collective efforts in academic pursuits and celebrating future collaborations that will enhance the landscape of scientific research.
