About the Play
Seigo Hatazawa's new work is rooted in real historical events and socio-political tensions surrounding the Aegis Ashore missile defense system, which the Japanese government decided to deploy in Akita and Yamaguchi in 2018, igniting a heated debate among local residents. The setting of the play, Akita City, is notable as it is the hometown of Rakuto Sasaki, the founder of Bunkaza Theater.
The narrative unfolds in a fictional high school, Yonezora Academy, where a group of teachers is grappling with a critical conflict on a day of celebration—their students' graduation day. Just two hours before the ceremony, Miyabi Kikuchi, the class representative who is set to deliver the graduation speech, reveals that her speech includes references to the Aegis Ashore program. Faced with potential chaos, mayhem, and public scrutiny, the faculty members desperately attempt to persuade her to modify the speech. The play poignantly captures the fears, hopes, and emotional turmoil of both the teachers and students as they approach this momentous occasion.
Short Synopsis
In March 2019, just before graduation, tensions rise in a classroom at a private high school located only 300 meters from the controversial Aegis Ashore site. Rumors about the speech's content spark heated discussions among the faculty as they worry about the implications of the student's words. Will graduation go off without issues, or will the speech ignite further debate?
