Transforming Waste: The Upcycling Flower Pot Experience at Fukuoka Flower Show 2026

Turning Waste into Beauty: The Upcycling Flower Pot Workshop at Fukuoka Flower Show 2026

In a remarkable initiative, approximately 1,000 plastic bottle caps have been transformed into beautiful flower pots as part of the Fukuoka Flower Show 2026. This event took place from March 22 to March 26, 2026, at the Fukoka City Botanical Garden, where around 30 participants engaged in an upcycling workshop led by the non-profit organization Karatsu Farm & Food in collaboration with Kyushu Exploration (Hakata Daimaru Co., Ltd.).

Participants had the opportunity to plant ornamental plants in the original flower pots they created, showcasing their pride in the recycling process. Voices of delight filled the venue, with visitors expressing their joy in planting in upcycled pots they crafted themselves. Children and adults alike participated, dropping the collected caps into machines to witness firsthand the transformation of waste into functional art.

The Mission of Fukuoka Flower Show 2026

The Fukuoka Flower Show is an international flower event inspired by traditional British garden shows, aimed at promoting the 'One Person, One Flower' movement in Fukuoka City. Spanning five days, it featured various activities such as garden contests, floral displays, and gourmet offerings, all held at the Fukoka City Botanical Garden. The event introduced a new dimension to its mission by incorporating the concept of a circular economy focused on sustainability and resource circulation.

The use of approximately 1,000 plastic caps collected from the local community illustrates the essence of upcycling—redesigning waste with new value. Using Precious Plastic technology, the caps were heated and molded, resulting in stunning marble-patterned flower pots. This workshop provided participants a unique opportunity to experience firsthand how discarded plastic can be reimagined into green souvenirs.

The Joy of Creating

Participants gleefully watched as the pots were removed from molds, with many expressing astonishment at the transformation of what they once considered trash. The flower pots, particularly those planted with violas from the Klemar Factory in Karatsu, garnered immense popularity, with numerous attendees expressing a desire to take one home.

“It was a privilege to showcase the message of circular economy through the flower festival. Many people experienced the moment when discarded plastics transformed into beautiful flower pots,” said a representative from Karatsu Farm & Food.

Collaborative Efforts Towards Sustainability

The collaboration between Karatsu Farm & Food and Kyushu Exploration enabled this workshop and the opportunity for location engagement within Fukuoka. Educational components and the planting experience illustrated how two regions, Saga and Fukuoka, could work together toward a sustainable future by honoring the principles of recycling and nature positivity.

Precious Plastic is a Dutch open-source initiative that provides free designs for machinery to recycle plastic waste. Karatsu Farm & Food, based in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, leverages this technology for educational workshops focused on environmental sustainability. To date, they have welcomed over 11,241 participants to their plastic recycling programs, resonating with community spirit and eco-conscious actions.

Conclusion

The Fukuoka Flower Show 2026 was not just a feast for the eyes but a meaningful journey into upcycling and sustainability. It fosters the importance of seeing trash through a new lens and encourages everyone to engage in eco-friendly practices. With workshops like these, the event builds a bridge between creativity, education, and environmental stewardship, ensuring that the legacy of circular living permeates throughout the community.
