Analyzing the Challenges Faced by Strategy Consulting Candidates in 2025

The Challenges Aspiring Strategy Consultants Face in 2025

As the landscape of strategy consulting evolves, the demand for effective case interview preparation continues to rise. Strategists, a case interview preparation school run by Top Tier Co., recently conducted an in-depth analysis based on data from over 500 aspiring strategy consultants. This article explores the significant challenges these candidates reported while preparing for case interviews in 2025.

Key Findings

The analysis revealed three primary areas of struggle for candidates:
1. Developing Strong Hypotheses and Solutions
2. Structuring Thoughts and Building Frameworks
3. Output Speed Under Time Pressure

1. Struggles with Hypotheses and Solutions

The most common issue reported (152 cases) was difficulties in generating quality and specific solutions. Many candidates felt that their solution proposals lacked originality or tangibility, often leading to generic recommendations. A recurring theme was the struggle with formulating solid initial hypotheses, which serve as the basis for their analyses. Many felt that they could not pinpoint an effective starting point for their analytical thought process.

2. Challenges in Structuring and Framework Development

The second most notable challenge, cited by 136 candidates, revolved around the issues of structuring problems and developing appropriate frameworks. Many candidates reported confusion in creating logic trees or selecting the right frameworks tailored to the challenges they were addressing. There was also concern regarding the thoroughness of their analyses; candidates were having difficulty identifying all necessary elements without omissions, underscoring a struggle to achieve MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive) conditions in their analyses.

3. Time Management and Thinking Speed

Another major area of concern (64 cases) consisted of time management and the pace of critical thinking. Candidates frequently found themselves unable to consolidate their thoughts within the time limits, resulting in rushed presentations or premature time-outs. They expressed frustrations over how to allocate their limited time effectively during interviews.

4. Difficulties with Fermi Estimation and Quantitative Analysis

Many candidates (58 cases) reported a lack of confidence when facing common quantitative problems such as Fermi estimation. They struggled with breaking down the problems mathematically under tight time constraints and articulating the rationale behind their numerical answers.

5. Communication Skills and Articulation

A significant number (53 cases) raised concerns about their ability to communicate their thoughts effectively during interviews. Candidates found it challenging to maintain logical coherence in their responses or summarize their answers concisely. Adjusting their arguments dynamically during discussions with interviewers was also reported as a common difficulty.

6. Discussion Quality

Approximately 46 candidates voiced concerns about their performance during discussions with interviewers. They experienced challenges in staying on topic and maintaining a coherent flow of dialogue, indicating difficulties in focusing on crucial points during debates.

7. Insufficient Case Preparation Experience

Twenty-two candidates indicated lack of experience in case interview preparations, mentioning that they had just begun and were unsure about their weaknesses or effective counter-strategies.

8. Confidence and Anxiety

About 27 respondents pointed to struggles with confidence and nerves as significant issues impacting their performance. They expressed feeling unsure of their responses, which contributed to anxiety and hindered their delivery.

9. Issues with Depth and Identifying Root Causes

Another 20 candidates mentioned that they struggled with deep analysis and pinpointing root causes of issues. They observed that many of their proposals tended to be superficial due to insufficient depth in their exploration of problems.

10. Lack of Business Knowledge and Industry Understanding

Finally, 17 candidates raised concerns over their knowledge of the industry or business principles affecting their ability to analyze unfamiliar scenarios.

Conclusion

The survey and analysis reveal the multitude of challenges faced by aspiring strategy consultants. However, these challenges come amid a backdrop of significantly improved preparation strategies. More candidates are becoming familiar with basic frameworks and Fermi estimation techniques, significantly reducing the number unprepared for case interviews.

Historically, candidates could achieve satisfactory results by simply reading books and practicing interviews a few times. Today, even those who have completed basic preparations face higher barriers. Thus, the new focus in case interview preparation is shifting from merely knowing the process to enhancing the overall quality of analytical thinking and output under time constraints.

At Top Tier, we are committed to not only providing a practice environment but also developing unique methods to enhance candidates' core thinking abilities. We help candidates understand why certain hypotheses are strong, where common pitfalls lie, and how to minimize repetitive mistakes. This ongoing feedback is integral to our training approach moving forward.
