Kyorin University Student's Heroic Rescue Earns Recognition
In a remarkable display of courage and composure, Natsumi Muraoka, a second-year student in the Emergency Medical Care program at Kyorin University, was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Chofu Fire Department on May 27. This honor was in response to her prompt and effective first aid efforts after witnessing an elderly man fall on a busy street.
The incident occurred on May 1 around 6 PM in Tsutsujigaoka, Chofu City. While Muraoka was working part-time at a convenience store, she noticed a gathering of people around the man who had fallen on the road separated by a national highway. Without hesitation, she rushed to the scene where she assessed the man’s condition. She found him conscious, but suffering from a head injury with blood spreading around him.
Muraoka quickly placed her jacket under the man’s head to avoid contact with the ground, then sought clean handkerchiefs from individuals nearby to apply pressure and control the bleeding. While administering first aid, she engaged the man in conversation to ascertain his awareness, effectively monitoring his mental state until emergency responders arrived a few minutes later.
Thanks to her quick actions, the man was transported to the hospital and received the necessary treatment. In recognition of her bravery and training, the Chofu Fire Chief, Hiroyuki Tomizuka, personally presented Muraoka with a commendation. During the ceremony, he praised her for her rapid, calm judgment and appropriate emergency measures, highlighting her effective communication with the fire team.
Reflecting on her experience, Muraoka shared her gratitude for the knowledge gained during her first-year classes, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in emergency situations. She stated, "I believe I was able to remain calm and respond quickly thanks to the help of those around me, who offered handkerchiefs and called for an ambulance. This experience has intensified my desire to be involved in emergency medical services. I am determined to work hard to become a competent emergency medical technician capable of making well-natured decisions in critical situations in the future."
The acknowledgment serves as an inspiring reminder of the critical role education plays in preparing individuals for life-saving actions. Muraoka's story not only showcases her bravery but also underscores the significance of community and teamwork in emergency response.
