DJI's Drone Innovations Reach New Heights on Mount Everest



In a spectacular demonstration of drone technology, DJI, the global leader in civilian drones, successfully completed three challenging missions on Mount Qomolangma, commonly known as Mount Everest. This significant achievement not only marks a milestone in aerial innovation but also showcases the growing capabilities of drones in high-altitude environments critical for deliveries, mapping, and climate research.

Mission Highlights



The missions utilized advanced drone models including the DJI FlyCart 100 for delivery tasks and the DJI Matrice 4E for detailed mapping on the South Slope of Everest in Nepal. One of the standout accomplishments was the use of DJI's first eVTOL delivery drone, the EV50, which facilitated extensive atmospheric chemistry research on the North Slope in China.

During the operation, the FlyCart 100 transported an impressive total of 10,073 kg of supplies and waste between Base Camp and Camp 1. Unlike traditional methods that require Sherpas to trek for hours, these flights significantly reduced the time taken to just eight minutes for each delivery. In total, the drone effectively transported 7,215 kg of climbing gear and removed 2,858 kg of waste from the mountain, contributing to environmental cleanup efforts in line with Nepal's sustainability goals.

Enhancing Mountaineering Safety



In addition to deliveries, the DJI Matrice 4E played a pivotal role in enhancing safety for climbers. The drone executed mapping operations at high altitudes, reaching up to 6,450 m, while battling extreme cold temperatures. It provided high-resolution data on the Khumbu Icefall, improving real-time hazard monitoring and enabling climbers to plan safer routes. The drone's sophisticated sensors offered centimeter-level mapping accuracy over a 3 km² area, becoming essential for rescue operations.

CEO of Airlift Technology, Raj Bikram Maharjan, highlighted the uniqueness of deploying such technology at this scale in Nepal, emphasizing the contributions of drones in operational safety awareness in extreme environments.

Scientific Contributions to Climate Research



DJI’s exploration did not stop with navigational aids. The EV50 drone completed multiple atmospheric observation flights, contributing valuable data regarding the troposphere's pollutant levels. Over a span of 12 days, the drone successfully transported equipment designed to measure ozone levels, reaching flight heights of 8,861 m. This endeavor marked a transformative approach to conducting scientific research in challenging atmospheric conditions, offering new insights into climate change impacts.
