Unique Collaboration Against Hidden Food Waste
This summer, a groundbreaking event titled
MeguRuto Kurasu is set to take place across several locations in Japan, spearheaded by
ASTRA FOOD PLAN, a food tech startup dedicated to addressing hidden food waste. The event runs from
August 8 to September 9, 2026, at contrasting urban destinations:
Newman Yokohama,
Shinjuku, and
Takanawa.
ASTRA FOOD PLAN’s commitment is encapsulated in their mission: transforming the concept of 'mottainai' (a Japanese term for wastefulness) into delightful culinary experiences. By focusing on ingredients that usually go to waste, they aim to not only introduce new tastes but also inspire a deeper appreciation for sustainable food practices.
Understanding Hidden Food Waste
The term
hidden food waste refers to food that is discarded but does not fall under the conventional definition of food loss. This includes culled produce that doesn't meet market standards and surplus agricultural products that go unutilized. To shed light on this issue, ASTRA FOOD PLAN collaborates with
STABLES, an organization that champions social responsibility in food production, to present compelling dishes that showcase the benefits of using these overlooked ingredients.
At the
MeguRuto Kurasu event, a special ingredient dubbed
“Tamanegi Gururiko” will take center stage, alongside
“Hop Gururiko”, used in exclusive craft beer creations. Through collaborative efforts across seven different eateries operated by STABLES, patrons will experience innovative dishes crafted from these ingredients, reinforcing the notion of circularity in dining.

ASTRA FOOD PLAN’s Innovative Approach
Under the leadership of CEO
Chihiro Kano, ASTRA FOOD PLAN developed the
JOSEN, a unique food preservation device that minimizes flavor degradation and maximizes nutrition. This innovative machine dries and sterilizes unutilized parts of vegetables in just seconds, opening avenues for upcycling by preserving and enhancing flavors.
The company aims to alleviate the food waste dilemma while promoting eco-friendly practices across the industry. With their
Gururiko® line, which highlights the potential of overlooked ingredients, they are actively transforming the way society perceives food sustainability.
This summer event stands not just as a culinary endeavor but as a powerful reminder of the role each individual plays in combating food waste.
