Successful Conclusion of the 2nd International Training on Modern Chest Wall Surgery Techniques

The Institute of Chest Wall Surgery (ICWS), based at Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital, hosted the second edition of the "Latest Chest Wall Surgery Technique Global Training Program" from July 16 to July 18, 2025. This event gathered ten thoracic surgeons from various countries, including the United States, Romania, India, Armenia, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Mexico, emphasizing the global importance of advancing surgical practices in chest wall surgeries.

By opening its doors to international professionals, the ICWS aims to share cutting-edge techniques that have emerged in recent years. Among the highlights of the program was the introduction of the innovative Wang Procedure for pectus excavatum correction. Unlike the conventional Nuss procedure that employs internal steel bars, the Wang approach places a bar externally on the chest wall, significantly reducing the risk of heart injury and promoting a hastier recovery process.

The program was structured with two key components: theoretical instruction and hands-on surgical observation. The theoretical segment commenced each day at 9 a.m., with Professor Wenlin Wang, Director of ICWS, presenting a comprehensive overview of the four landmark surgical methods developed by the institute: the Wang, Wung, Wenlin, and Willine procedures. These techniques represent the frontier of chest wall surgery, designed to address diverse deformities effectively.

At 3 p.m. following the theoretical sessions, participants engaged in live surgical observations. They had the opportunity to assist during surgeries that tackled various complex cases, including asymmetric pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. The ICWS surgical team demonstrated exceptional proficiency and collaboration, completing an impressive 83 surgeries in just three days. Each surgery left a lasting impression on attendees, further solidifying ICWS’s reputation as a leader in chest wall surgery.

As the three-day event wrapped up, participants expressed enthusiasm for the knowledge gained and the impact they expected these groundbreaking techniques would have on their surgical practices.
