GROWI Version 8 Release: Enhancing Internal Wiki Functionality with AI Features

GROWI Version 8: New AI Features Transforming Internal Wikis

GROWI Inc., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has officially released version 8 of its open-source internal Wiki tool, GROWI. Along with the new version, GROWI Cloud has also started offering the stable version 8.0.1, bringing numerous enhancements to improve the utilization of accumulated knowledge within corporate environments.

New Functionality

The recent update focuses on "bringing knowledge to life" within the Wiki space. One of the most significant new features is the GROWI AI Agent, which allows users to autonomously explore the Wiki and provide answers that span multiple pages. Additionally, the introduction of GROWI Vault enables users to handle their Wiki as git files, integrating seamless data management and exploration capabilities.

Context of the Update

Historically, internal Wikis have served as information bases that people write and read. As the use of generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent, GROWI v8 is evolving into a resource that not only serves humans but also can be leveraged by generative AI. The new GROWI AI Agent reads Wiki content directly and provides answers, while GROWI Vault allows external AI tools to read the Wiki content as files.

Key Features of GROWI AI Agent

The revamped GROWI AI Agent beta replaces the previous GROWI AI (in beta). It has transformed from a basic knowledge assistant into a sophisticated agent capable of autonomous exploration and cross-referencing multiple Wiki pages to construct more comprehensive responses. Notably, users will not have their previous GROWI AI data automatically transferred, and specific transition details have been communicated to relevant customers via email.

Evolution from GROWI AI to GROWI AI Agent

Features Old GROWI AI (up to v7) New GROWI AI Agent (from v8)
---------------------------
Initialization Required setup and learning selection No setup; direct questioning allowed
Information Freshness Lagged updates from external vectors Always latest information with direct reads
Permission Handling Prone to pre-learned exposure issues Real-time respect for view permissions
Data Retention External storage for vectors Utilizes GROWI's own search capabilities
Capabilities Simple sidebar interaction Autonomous exploration, summaries & explanations

An exciting addition is the ability to narrow down questions by specifying pages, enhancing the context even when referring to seemingly unrelated content. GROWI supports multiple AI providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Azure, allowing users to choose which service to interface with the GROWI platform.

GROWI Vault: The New File Management System

The GROWI Vault enables users to retrieve their internal Wiki content as Markdown files that can be managed through Git. Since all GROWI pages are saved in Markdown format, this feature allows for efficient usage of familiar tools. By using simple commands, users can easily download and update their content, adhering to permission restrictions while accessing only what they are permitted to view.

Examples of use include:
  • - AI Integration: Delivering knowledge files to AI assistants according to access rights.
  • - Development Workflow: Fetching documents using Git and processing them with preferred tools.

Currently available as a basic read-only function, GROWI Vault is under development for wider use, with plans for future updates.

Contribution Visualization

GROWI v8 also includes a new contribution graph, providing users with a GitHub-like visual representation of their daily knowledge-sharing activities. This feature counts contributions such as page creation, updates, and comments, facilitating a culture of writing and awareness of team engagement.

Additional Updates

Alongside the main features, GROWI v8 brings several enhancements, such as:
  • - Direct retrieval of pages in Markdown format by appending `.md` to the URLs.
  • - Reduced memory consumption on the server side.
  • - Enhanced auditing capabilities for tracking file attachment and download actions.

What is GROWI?
