The Rise of AI in Holiday Shopping: A Look at Consumer Trends
As the holiday season approaches, new research by Forter has unveiled a striking trend:
67% of U.S. consumers are gearing up to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for their holiday shopping this year. This sudden pivot towards AI tools marks a significant evolution in consumer behavior, one that retailers need to acknowledge and adapt to swiftly.
Conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Forter, the survey polled over
2,000 Americans, and the findings are eye-opening. Just a week after the introduction of Meta's AI assistant, Muse, a clear majority of consumers expressed their intent to incorporate AI into their shopping routines this holiday season. Notably,
37% of shoppers indicated they expect to rely on AI even more than in previous years.
AI's impact on shopping behavior is evident. In fact,
43% of respondents reported having either discovered or purchased items from new retailers based on AI recommendations. This demonstrates a growing trust in AI as a valuable resource for identifying deals and discovering brands that consumers may not have encountered otherwise.
Generational Divide in AI Adoption
When examining the demographic differences in the adoption of AI shopping tools, the research highlighted a notable generational divide. A staggering
83% of young adults aged
18 to 34 plan to engage with AI for their holiday shopping, a stark contrast to just
40% of those aged
65 and older. Furthermore, a significant
68% of younger consumers have already purchased from new retailers as a result of AI suggestions, showcasing the technology's influence among this demographic.
While there's a substantial willingness to embrace AI, consumers are keen on retaining control over their shopping experience. A remarkable
78% of holiday shoppers are comfortable delegating parts of their shopping journey to AI agents. However, they also emphasize the importance of safeguards. For example, over half (53%) expressed they would be willing to let AI autonomously purchase gifts if the transaction value were reasonable.
Preferences for Autonomous Transactions
The data reveals that potential users of AI shopping assistants want assurance and protection with their purchases. In a survey question concerning what measures would boost their confidence in allowing AI to handle their shopping autonomously, responses included:
- - Requiring final approval before purchase (26%)
- - Setting spending limits (24%)
- - Guaranteeing a refund for incorrect or fraudulent transactions (23% and 22% respectively)
- - Controlling what personal data AI can access (22%)
Jen Howard, Chief Merchant at Forter, commented on these findings, stating, “Many shoppers are ready to hand AI the keys, but not without guardrails. They want final approval, spending limits, and a guarantee they'll be made whole if something goes wrong.” This sentiment underscores the balance consumers are attempting to strike between convenience and security.
Retailers Must Adapt or Risk Losing out
As shoppers increasingly turn to AI to enhance their shopping experiences, it is essential for retailers to keep pace with these changing preferences. Retailers who embrace the trend and invest in AI shopping solutions now stand to benefit greatly this holiday season. Those that disregard this paradigm shift may find themselves missing out on significant traffic driven by AI-enhanced shopping experiences, which could fundamentally alter the commerce landscape.
As this holiday season unfolds, we will undoubtedly witness the ramifications of AI's growing role in retail. With consumers eager to explore AI's capabilities, the intersection of technology and shopping promises to shape a new era of consumerism.
