Joint Initiative for Tourist Safety in Okinawa
On July 16, 2025, KKday Japan and Activity Japan, two of Asia's leading travel experience booking platforms, signed a partnership agreement with the Okinawa Prefectural Police to prevent water-related accidents among tourists, including international visitors.
The Situation
With the increase in leisure activities in the coastal areas of Okinawa, there has also been a concerning rise in water accidents. According to Okinawa Police data, accidents involving foreign tourists have skyrocketed to nearly tenfold compared to the previous year. This urgent trend highlights the need for effective safety measures, particularly as the influx of tourists is expected to grow.
The primary causes of these accidents are attributed to a lack of life jackets, unawareness of local safety regulations, and inadequate multilingual safety information. Clearly, as the diversifying needs of tourists evolve, the existing safety systems are struggling to keep pace.
Roles and Measures by Each Company
KKday offers multilingual experiences for incoming tourists and has seen a significant growth in bookings for activities in the Okinawa area year-on-year. The collaboration aims to enhance safety information at three pivotal moments: during the booking process, before departure, and upon arrival on the day of the activity.
