His most celebrated works, including Mayonaka no Yajisan Kitasan and Anime Manga from That Day, resonate with audiences, particularly through their unique reflections on human nature and societal issues.

In 2014, Kotobuki received the prestigious Purple Ribbon Medal, recognizing his extensive contributions to the art community. His recent exhibitions, including a duo show with renowned actor Naoto Takenaka and a solo exhibition at the Kōmyō-in temple in Kyoto, testify to his artistic versatility. Furthermore, his passion for art has transcended borders, as evident in his participation in international exhibitions like the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Arts and the Jeolla International Water Ink Biennale in South Korea.

The upcoming exhibition, tentatively titled “Cute Hell,” will transform the gallery space into an imaginative representation of hell. Inspired by various cultural representations across the globe, Kotobuki’s work will encourage viewers to reflect on their actions in this life. This thematic approach fits into a recent trend, where hell-themed exhibitions have sparked interest from various corners of the artistic world.

About Shiriagari Kotobuki

Shiriagari Kotobuki, born in 1958 in Shizuoka, Japan, began his career as a manga artist after graduating from Tamabi's Graphic Design program. He initially worked with Kirin Beer Co., focusing on package design and advertising before gaining fame with his debut manga, Ryuuseika Chou in 1984. His innovative approach to parody and humor distinguished him in the manga industry, with notable works including Eleki na Haru, Mayonaka no Yajisan Kitasan, and Chikyuu Bouei Ka no Hitobito. His accolades reflect his impact, including multiple awards at the Bungeishunju Manga Awards and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Additionally, he serves as a guest professor at Kobe Design University.
