Mariana Minerals Reinitiates Operations at Copper One



Mariana Minerals, acclaimed for being the only software-first minerals company globally, has just announced the revival of mining activities at Copper One, situated in southeastern Utah. This venture is remarkable as it positions Copper One as the world's inaugural mine employing autonomous technologies across its mining, refining, and capital project domains, all integrated under a singular operating framework.

With the acquisition of the Lisbon Valley Mining Company in late 2025, Mariana gained control over a permitted land expanse of approximately 10,000 acres, a site that has been yielding high-purity copper cathodes since 2009. While the refining operations continued without interruption, mining was put on hold in late 2024. The resumption of mining operations this month marks a significant milestone in the industry, as the implementation of autonomous systems commenced right from day one of operations.

The Vision of Autonomy
Turner Caldwell, Co-Founder and CEO of Mariana Minerals, expressed the groundbreaking nature of Copper One, highlighting that the focus is on establishing full autonomy across operations. “Copper One is distinctive because it prioritizes the delivery of end-to-end autonomy. We rapidly deploy these technologies across both mining and refining sectors, directed by our internal software infrastructure,” stated Caldwell.

At the heart of this innovative expansion lies MarianaOS, an autonomous-first mining operating system. This system is transformative as it connects three essential subsystems: MineOS, PlantOS, and CapitalProjectOS, enabling a seamless synchronization from project execution all the way to copper production.

  • - MineOS focuses on integrating advanced autonomous equipment platforms, like Pronto’s Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) which utilizes camera-based machine learning and GNSS technology to facilitate completely driverless haul truck operations. Additionally, the AutoMine® platform from Sandvik allows for autonomous production drilling, empowering operators to control multiple machines from a remote center. Furthermore, robots such as Boston Dynamics’ Spot will autonomously patrol various areas within the mine and refinery.

  • - Transitioning to PlantOS, this subsystem extends automation into refining processes, interfacing real-time sensor data across the operation to form a cohesive control system. This innovation enables the prediction of operational variations, automatic adjustments of reagent dosing, and maintenance alerts before they disrupt production.

  • - Lastly, CapitalProjectOS revolutionizes the planning and execution of capital-intensive projects, amalgamating all necessary data for efficient progress tracking and risk assessment, expediting project timelines crucially.

Rapidly Scaling Production
Though Mariana is in the midst of developing new greenfield projects, Copper One’s existing infrastructure - including an open pit mine, heap leach pad, and SX-EW refining plant - positions it uniquely for the rapid deployment of MarianaOS at an extensive scale. The commendable aim is to amplify production to 50,000 metric tons of high-purity copper cathode annually by 2030 by leveraging existing proven mineral deposits and incorporating copper scrap recycling into the operation.

Addressing National Supply Gaps
Given that the U.S. currently relies on imports for about 50% of its refined copper, the urgency to fill the looming supply shortages is acute. The forecast for domestic demand is projected to nearly double by 2035, driven by advancements in AI data centers, electric vehicles, and modernization of the energy grid. This burgeoning gap signifies not just a market issue but a critical national security concern. Past investigations have flagged copper imports as a direct threat to the defense industrial base, making operations such as those at Copper One increasingly essential at a national level.
