Dignity Health Dominican Hospital Welcomes New Internal Medicine Residents

On July 28, 2026, Dignity Health Dominican Hospital hosted an important milestone for the future of healthcare by celebrating its latest cohort of internal medicine residents during a White Coat Ceremony. This ceremony not only marked the beginning of their medical careers but also underscored the hospital's unwavering commitment to fostering compassionate and qualified physicians.

The ceremony, held in collaboration with the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), symbolizes a critical transition for the residents as they move from academic study to clinical practice. Gerard Garcia, a resident, reflected on the significance of the event, stating, "Today is not just about wearing the white coat but representing all the hard work and dedication it took to get here."

Christine McSweeney, the hospital's president, expressed immense pride in the residents, noting, "Witnessing their commitment during the White Coat Ceremony fills us with incredible joy. This collaboration with the Morehouse School of Medicine is imperative in addressing our most pressing healthcare needs. Each resident who dons the white coat marks a fundamental step in our shared vision of developing culturally competent and compassionate physicians who will serve our community and wherever needed."

Since the inception of this partnership, Dominican Hospital has welcomed 24 new physicians. The inaugural class of residents commenced in July 2024 and is expected to graduate in June 2027. During the recent ceremony, the residents embarking on their demanding three-year training program were honored, showcasing their dedication to becoming culturally humble practitioners.

This innovative medical residency program is part of a broader initiative known as the More in Common Alliance (MiCA), established through collaboration between MSM and CommonSpirit Health. It aims to expand representation in the healthcare profession and ensure that underrepresented communities are served by qualified medical professionals.

With aspirations to positively impact healthcare access and quality, the program is poised to address the pressing healthcare challenges faced by many underserved populations. As part of their continuous growth and dedication to comprehensive care, Dominican Hospital plans to expand its medical team soon, expecting to welcome ten new physicians in family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and hospital medicine in the upcoming months.
