International Smart Village Initiative Launch

During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on March 10, 2025, a significant collaboration was announced between Zambia's Ministry of Technology and Huawei. This partnership marked the inauguration of the International Smart Village Showcase, a crucial initiative aimed at fostering digital transformation in rural areas of Zambia. The showcase was presented during a public sector forum focusing on creating a synergy between networks and cloud technologies to accelerate the country’s digitization.

The event attracted over 200 industry leaders and technical experts in public service who shared insights on various pathways to enhance the nation’s tech-driven transformation. This dialogue emphasized the necessity of adopting advanced technological solutions to modernize public services in alignment with global standards.

The launch of this Smart Village initiative aims to provide essential infrastructure that includes electricity and internet access, directly benefiting local communities. Following a recent successful implementation of the first Smart Village location in Zambia, completed within a month in July 2024, residents now have access to telemedicine services and remote education, crucial for uplifting their standard of living.

Li Junfeng, Huawei’s Vice President and CEO for the Global Public Sector, underscored during his speech the critical role digital transformation plays in boosting national capabilities and improving citizen welfare. He highlighted Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a vital element of this transition, revolutionizing public sector engagement by allowing for more efficient and effective service delivery.

Moreover, the event featured discussions led by Koh Hong-Eng, Huawei’s Chief Scientist for Public Services, urging participants to deliberate on national-level digital transformation strategies. Felix C. Mutati, Zambia's Technology Minister, expressed that the Smart Village Project aligns with the nation’s vision for development towards 2030. By fostering smart education, the initiative not only equips the next generation with crucial digital skills but also addresses inequalities, aiming for a future where every Zambian can contribute meaningfully to national growth.

The implementation of digital technology in Zambia is seen as a means to empower communities, driving progress and maximizing potential. Huawei's commitment to enhancing smart solutions in government services and public service sectors aligns with a broader vision of creating a learning society, which is crucial in today’s digital age.

In conclusion, the Smart Village initiative signifies a landmark step towards achieving a more equitable, efficient, and sustainable future for Zambia. It reflects both entities' dedication to harnessing technological advancements to build a brighter, more connected tomorrow for the rural populace, ensuring their active participation in the nation’s ongoing development.

This event highlights not just Zambia's aspirations but also a shared commitment to redefining how technology can serve communities in profound ways.
