Celebrating 97 Years of the China Academy of Art

On April 8, 1928, the China Academy of Art (CAA), known as a pioneer in fine arts higher education in China, was inaugurated with a profound vision articulated by Mr. Cai Yuanpei. He emphasized the transformative power of art in enriching human experience through cultivating a sense of beauty. Fast forward to today, the CAA has continued to uphold this original mission for 97 years, fostering a sense of cultural identity and artistic passion in the Chinese community.

To commemorate its 97th anniversary, the CAA unveiled the "2025 CAA Report", which encapsulates three significant projects aimed at igniting a new wave of creativity and research. The donation of 213 artworks from the family of renowned artist Zao Wou-Ki marks a landmark moment, significantly enhancing the CAA's collection and reinforcing its educational role. Zao Wou-Ki, who began his artistic journey at the Academy, left behind a lasting legacy, and this donation will enable future generations to connect with his incredible body of work. The first exhibition to showcase these pieces—featuring early oil paintings, prints, and ceramics—represents a pivotal addition to mainstream Chinese art collections.

In recognition of this generous contribution, the CAA is establishing the Zao Wou-Ki Research Center. This center aims to focus on the artist’s enduring influence by promoting research, public education, and international exchanges concerning his work. In looking at Zao's art, this center will bridge thematic insights between Eastern and Western artistic traditions, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the evolving global art landscape.

The festivities continued with the launch of the 'Design Intelligence Award' (DIA) Innovation Incubation Initiative. Spearheaded by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, this initiative aims to seamlessly integrate manufacturing with educational innovation. The DIA has evolved into China’s most influential design award, garnering international attention while shaping future frameworks of collaboration between the industry and academia. As a seed project, 'Painting 100' intends to enrich the cultural landscape of China by preserving traditional arts while promoting innovation and creativity in contemporary practices.

One of the most vibrant exhibitions was the 'Black Myth Wukong' Art Exhibition at the CAA Art Museum, running until May 21. Featuring art from the acclaimed AAA game, this exhibition explores the intersection between digital and physical art forms, showcasing unique artwork directly tied to gameplay narratives. Visitors to the exhibition are treated to an immersive experience, delving into the game's intricacies and artistic interpretations.

The opening of the new Xiao Feng Art Museum was another highlight, featuring the artist’s core works accumulated over eight decades. The art exhibition titled 'Children of the Era' is dedicated to the cultural legacy that Xiao Feng embodies, further solidifying the Academy's role as a repository of art that reflects the nation's collective spirit and aspirations.
