Consumers Energy's New Initiative in Kalamazoo
Consumers Energy, Michigan's largest energy provider, has launched an ambitious program titled
'Count on Us Kalamazoo!' designed to assist local residents in reducing their energy consumption and saving money on their utility bills. This year-long initiative reflects the company's commitment to addressing energy waste, particularly in underserved areas.
The program specifically targets residents in three zip codes of Kalamazoo, with a focus on supporting low-income households that are at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. By collaborating with local community action agencies and non-profit organizations, Consumers Energy aims to deliver various energy-efficient upgrades tailored to the specific needs of households.
Lauren Snyder, the Vice President of Customer Experience at Consumers Energy, highlighted the company's dedication to providing safe, reliable, and affordable energy to its customers. She stated,
"We've found that energy efficiency works best when homes are structurally sound. This program makes that possible with premium energy efficiency upgrades—all covered by us. It's our way of helping our customers, especially the most vulnerable, save money on their bills."
The upgrades available through this initiative include pipe wrap installation, smart thermostat replacements, window film application, HVAC tune-ups, and duct cleaning. Certain homeowners may even qualify for additional premium energy efficiency upgrades.
This endeavor follows a successful launch of a similar program in Flint during the previous year, demonstrating Consumers Energy's commitment to expanding its outreach and impact. The collaboration with GenWel United, a Flint-based community organization, was pivotal in ensuring the success of the initiative in that area.
Edward Johnson, Founder and Chairman of GenWel United, praised Consumers Energy for its unwavering dedication to community welfare, stating,
"They've always been really dedicated to seeing the community thrive. They want people in our communities to succeed and find ways to enhance their situations."
In addition to the energy-saving upgrades, Consumers Energy plans to engage in outreach efforts throughout Kalamazoo by sponsoring events aimed at spreading awareness about the initiative. This will include donating and distributing energy savings kits designed to enable residents to manage their energy consumption more effectively.
