IEM International Marks 40 Years of Leadership and Innovation
IEM International, Inc., a prominent player in emergency management and disaster recovery, proudly commemorates its 40th anniversary on February 7, 2025. Since its inception in 1985, under the visionary leadership of Madhu Beriwal, IEM has established itself as an industry leader, providing impactful solutions to communities both in the United States and globally.
Commitment to Excellence
Over the last four decades, IEM has transformed the landscape of emergency management by prioritizing innovation and science. The company’s dedication to building resilient communities is evident in its active participation in disaster response and recovery initiatives. As Beriwal stated, "This anniversary reflects the strength of the IEM team and the partnerships we've fostered through the years."

Key Achievements
Demilitarizing Chemical Weapons
IEM has played a vital role in the safe disposal of U.S. chemical weapons for over 30 years. Our expertise in supporting facilities, including the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility, has been crucial in ensuring public safety and national security. Since 1998, IEM has been integral in supporting FEMA's Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program, emphasizing our commitment to community safety.
Hurricane Pam Exercise
In 2004, IEM pioneered the FEMA Catastrophic Planning Project for Southeast Louisiana, culminating in the Hurricane Pam exercise. This critical simulation modeled a Category 5 hurricane hitting New Orleans and has been instrumental in developing successful disaster response strategies, significantly influencing the response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The lessons learned and methodologies introduced during this period set a new standard for catastrophic planning nationally.
Pioneering Disaster Recovery Efforts
Since Hurricane Katrina, IEM has been at the forefront of disaster recovery efforts across the nation. Notably, the company led the fastest housing recovery during the 2016 Louisiana Great Floods, restoring over 13,000 homes within just three years. This success showcases IEM’s unwavering commitment to rebuilding communities and encouraging resilience against future disasters.
COVID-19 Response
During the COVID-19 pandemic, IEM Health played a pivotal role in the national response, administering more than 1.7 million vaccinations across 20 states. IEM also provided critical logistical support, including the operation of monoclonal antibody therapy clinics and field hospitals, which proved essential for treating patients during the crisis.
Investing in Puerto Rico’s Future
IEM’s commitment to Puerto Rico is unwavering, especially in light of the challenges posed by Hurricanes Irma, Maria, and Fiona. By collaborating with local governments and leveraging island-based talent, IEM strives to enhance infrastructure and improve preparedness for future disasters in Puerto Rico.
Looking Ahead
As IEM International celebrates its 40th anniversary, the firm remains steadfast in its mission to build safer and more resilient communities. With a portfolio that includes supporting federal, state, and local entities, IEM integrates innovative technology and structured strategy to tackle complex challenges in emergency management. This milestone not only marks past achievements but also sets the stage for continued innovation in saving lives and protecting communities.
In a world facing increasing environmental challenges, IEM’s leadership and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly pave the way for transformative approaches in disaster resilience and management in the years to come.
