TONICHI Continues Internship Program with IIT Students to Tackle IT Talent Shortage

In an ongoing effort to address the pressing IT talent shortage faced by many companies in Japan, TONICHI (Tohni Printing Co., Ltd), headquartered in Tokyo's Koto Ward and led by President Mitsuaki Nishikawa, has welcomed two interns from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for the second consecutive year. These interns have initiated a two-month training program under the mentorship of seasoned IIT alumni who are now engineers at TONICHI's digital division, T-NEXT. This initiative is made possible through a collaboration with Willings, a company that supports IIT students in securing internship positions.

IIT, recognized for its rigorous technical education, has campuses across India, and Willings has established solid connections with many of these institutions. This partnership allows TONICHI to navigate the complexities of recruiting talent from IIT, having now hosted a total of nine interns through this program. As Japan grapples with a significant scarcity of IT professionals, particularly engineers, TONICHI is intensifying its efforts in developing new business applications. Notably, IIT graduates are already involved in creating essential products, such as the corporate card management system 'Nexsta-Meishi'.

The internship program addresses common challenges in global recruitment, such as early turnover and mismatches between the company and new hires. Historically, the majority of engineers at TONICHI have been recruited post-internship, significantly improving the hiring process for the company, with three of the four interns last year receiving job offers. This streamlined process not only allows the company to assess the interns' fit and skills but also enables students to evaluate the company’s environment and culture, thereby achieving a high retention rate.

IIT is renowned globally for nurturing elite scientific talent, with many of its alumni ascending to leadership positions in leading tech giants like Amazon and Google. Amidst fierce competition for talent worldwide, TONICHI finds itself as a fresh option for IIT graduates. The presence of previous IIT alumni within the company provides reassurance for the new interns, and the company has taken proactive steps to foster a welcoming environment by organizing events such as welcome parties, which help build trust and camaraderie in a short period.

The warm atmosphere of these welcome events often sees participation from executives and employees from other departments, further reinforcing the company's commitment to integrating new talent. TONICHI’s dedication to nurturing young talent not only contributes to the individual growth of interns but also enhances the overall capability and innovation of the company in a competitive digital landscape.
