Comerica Bank's 16th Annual Metro Detroit Shred Day

On June 14, residents of Metro Detroit will have the opportunity to safely secure their personal information at Comerica Bank’s Great Lakes Campus. This event, known as the Metro Detroit Shred Day, will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and provides a free service where participants can bring their sensitive paper documents as well as electronic devices for proper disposal and recycling.

A Community Initiative

This year marks the 16th edition of this popular event, which has gained significant traction within the community. Comerica has partnered with Iron Mountain and Information System Resources (ISR) to ensure the safe destruction of documents and recycling of electronics, allowing individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits to prevent identity theft and protect critical information regarding their finances and personal lives.

Why Participate?

Steve Davis, the Michigan Market President of Comerica Bank, underscored the importance of this event, commenting, “Shred Day offers our community and small businesses an opportunity to help protect their personal and sensitive information.” With a growing rate of fraud losses reported by the Federal Trade Commission, the need for secure disposal has never been more urgent. The event not only addresses data protection but also champions anti-hunger efforts by collecting non-perishable food donations for Gleaners Community Food Bank.

Previous Success

Last year's event saw tremendous participation, processing over 1,100 vehicles and destroying approximately 169,000 pounds of paper. Moreover, around 17,000 pounds of electronic waste were recycled, further emphasizing the event's commitment to environmental sustainability. This year, as well as shredding documents, participants are encouraged to donate food items, reflecting Comerica's mission to serve the community on multiple fronts.

The Impact on Sustainability and Hunger

Shred Day not only focuses on fraud prevention but also tackles pressing issues of sustainability and food insecurity. During last year’s Shred Day, generous contributions resulted in 2,000 non-perishable food items and nearly $4,500 raised, translating into over 28,000 meals distributed to those in need. Davis noted, “Community engagement at Shred Day combines fraud prevention with positively impacting the environment and reducing food insecurity.”

Recycling paper reduces the amount of waste in landfills and dramatically cuts down on pollution and resource consumption. Over 15 years, nearly 1.3 million pounds of shredded documents have been turned into recycled pulp, highlighting the lasting benefits of participating in this event.

Logistics for Participants

To ensure a smooth process for all attendees, participants are instructed to arrive at the event via West 12 Mile Road and enter the Comerica office campus where volunteers will assist in directing traffic. There's no need to leave vehicles, as items will be unloaded safely by volunteers. This year, the event has implemented thorough safety protocols to ensure all participants can engage confidently.

Acceptable Items for Disposal

Participants can shred any documents containing sensitive information, such as outdated bank statements, medical records, and more. Furthermore, ISR will be on-site to handle electronic waste, accepting devices such as CPUs, laptops, and cellphones.
