BayCare's Commitment to Behavioral Health Services
The State of Florida has taken a momentous step in acknowledging the critical need for enhanced behavioral health services in West Central Florida. BayCare Health System's St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa has earned the prestigious distinction of being designated as the
BayCare Behavioral Health Teaching Hospital. This designation not only illustrates BayCare's ongoing dedication to mental health care but also signifies a robust partnership aimed at training future mental health professionals.
A Collaborative Effort
The formal recognition by state authorities was made possible through BayCare's strategic collaboration with the
Florida State University College of Medicine's Center for Behavioral Health Integration. This partnership aligns the substantial resources of FSU with BayCare's existing behavioral health operations. As a result, the new designation positions BayCare and St. Joseph’s Hospital at the forefront of addressing the increasing mental health needs within the community.
Stephanie Conners, president and CEO of BayCare Health System, emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, "Our designation as a behavioral health teaching hospital is a recognition of all the hard work BayCare and its team members have been providing for years to meet our communities' behavioral health needs."
Expanding Access to Care
This designation is not just ceremonial; it is a renewable accolade to be reassessed every two years. It also comes with competitive grant funding, which is crucial for expanding and innovating behavioral health services. The importance of addressing mental health issues has never been clearer, especially as individuals and families strive for well-being amidst ongoing societal challenges. Dr. Alma Littles, dean of the Florida State University College of Medicine, highlighted the urgent need for greater access to behavioral health services, remarking on how this partnership will help train new generations of care providers while improving access for patients in the region.
BayCare's Leadership in Behavioral Health
BayCare Health System stands as the largest provider of behavioral health services in West Central Florida. Their comprehensive approach includes a variety of programs such as inpatient services, outpatient therapy, and specialized initiatives that cater to veterans, educational institutions, and first responders. Notably, they recently opened Florida's first
behavioral health urgent care center and are in the process of expanding the
Central Receiving Facility in Pasco County.
Since 2022, BayCare has also implemented a psychiatry residency program aimed at attracting and retaining fresh medical graduates to serve the local population’s needs. These strategic decisions showcase BayCare's unwavering commitment to meeting the complex demands of mental health within the community.
Recognizing Excellence in Leadership
BayCare’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Florida Hospital Association recognized Gail Ryder, BayCare's vice president of Behavioral Health, as its
2025 Health Care Leader of the Year. This accolade reflects her dedicated advocacy for behavioral health services across the state and reinforces BayCare's role as a leader in mental health innovation.
